Summary

This is a Chapter on Those Whose ʔalifāt [A]s are Prevented from ʔimālah ‘inclination’, but Which You Inclined Before

10.0 In the previous chapter (Chapter 9 (479)), Sībawayh discussed exceptional cases to the ʔimālah of ʔalif [A], that is, those in which the ʔimālah ‘inclination’ of the ʔalif [A] took place without there being a kasrah [i] or yāʔ [y] in the immediate context of the ʔalif [A]. In this chapter, he discusses phonetically systematic cases where inclination is prevented. The thrust of the chapter is the effect that ʔal-ħuruwf ʔal-mustaʕliyah ‘the raised letters’ – the sʕād [sʕ], the dʕād [dʕ], the tʕāʔ [tʕ], the ðʕāʔʕ], the γayn [γ], the Ԍāf [Ԍ] and the xāʔ [x] – have when they precede or follow the ʔalif [A].

10.1 Inclination of ʔalif [A] does not occur if one of the seven letters sʕād [sʕ], dʕād [dʕ], tʕāʔ [tʕ], ðʕāʔʕ], γayn [γ], Ԍāf [Ԍ] or xāʔ [x] is before the ʔalif [A] (II, P. 285, L. 18–20). For example:

sʕāʕidun ‘climber’ (II, P. 285, L. 19)

tʕāʔifun ‘wanderer’ (II, P. 285, L. 19)

γāʔibun ‘absent’ (II, P. 285, L. 19)

Ԍāʕidun ‘seated’ (II, P. 285, L. 19)

xāmidun ‘inactive’ (II, P. 285, L. 19)

dʕāminun ‘guarantor’ (II, P. 285, L. 20)

ðʕālimun ‘oppressor’ (II, P. 285, L. 20)

10.2 Inclination of ʔalif [A] does not occur if one of the seven letters sʕād [sʕ], dʕād [dʕ], tʕāʔ [tʕ], ðʕāʔʕ], γayn [γ], Ԍāf [Ԍ], or xāʔ [x] is after the ʔalif [A] (II, P. 286, L. 4–7).
