Introduction
from 1 - The Transnational Context
Summary
The purpose of Part I is to set the particular case of Mann and Ross in its relevant transnational and, to a lesser extent, comparative and global contexts. This is done in order to widen and deepen our knowledge and understanding of their transnational activities and influences. In Part I, Chapter 1, I begin this task by defining my key terms and usages, outlining the recent turn to transnational labour history and evaluating its strengths, weaknesses, promise and pitfalls. I afford an overall welcome to transnational labour history and its potential to make a significant contribution to the revival of labour history.
In Part I, Chapter 2, I move from historiographical, methodological and conceptual concerns to more substantive matters. I attempt to recapture the neglected radical transnational world in which Mann and Ross lived and worked and aspects of their contribution to it.
