1. The two journals under review include 30 articles plus book reviews. There is not sufficient space in this review to discuss each article. Only some major facets of the articles will be mentioned. The book reviews will not be discussed. Since each journal issue is book length, it would take a long book review for each issue to adequately cover all of the articles.

2. There is duplication of analysis beyond the publication of essentially the same essays on Hyènes by J.R. Rayfield and Afrique je te plumerai by Frank Ukadike in both RAL and Iris. Rayfield's essay is in English in RAL and French in Iris. Ukadike's essay in RAL is an abbreviated version of his essay in Iris.

3. In addition to the essays by Rayfield and Ukadike mentioned in note 2, there is an interview with Flora Gomes by Ukadike in RAL. Other persons with essays in both journals are Kenneth Harrow who discusses Sembène's Camp de Thiaroye in Iris, and Keyan Tomaselli and Maureen Eke who discuss orality in South African documentary films and related theoretical issues in both journals.

4. Most literature on North African films is in French and Arabic, and there is more literature on lusophone African film in Portuguese than in any other language.

5.
