page 173 note 1 Report kindly provided by Prof. Dr. M. Oluş Arik. We are greatly indebted to the Assistant Director and the Ankara staff for the translation of this and the other Turkish reports.

page 173 note 2 The church with frescoes and these other structures must be the churches that were mentioned by Cuinet who visited Alanya in the 19th century. He said that there were 32 mosques, several turbes, 9 medrese, 5 Orthodox Greek churches, a Turkish bath, 3 hans and an elaborate barracks in Alanya. See: Cuinet, , V. La Turquie d'Asie, Géographie Administrative, T.I., Paris. 1982 p. 869.

page 173 note 3 This inscription was published by A. Osman Uysal, a member of the team. See: Uysal, A. Osman, “Alanya Kalesine Ait Yayınlanmamış. bir Kitabe”, Artist Plastik, Sanatlar Dergisi, Sayı 1. Şubat 1986, s. 30–31. There is, however, a printing error in the heading of the article.
