L'analyse du matériau squelettique pose toujours un problème délicat à l'anthropologue et à l'archéologue. De nombreux chercheurs ont eu déjà l'idée d'utiliser ce matériau dans leurs essais de reconstruction de l'histoire culturelle (Cf. Armélagos, 1968) ; néanmoins il nous paraît que d'autres applications, plus fécondes, pourraient être faites de ces données. Puisque, apparemment, la culture d'une population peut influencer ses processus biologiques, certains aspects du comportement culturel d'une population doivent nécessairement avoir marqué les squelettes qu'elle a laissés.

Une des tâches de l'anthropologue physique, une fois qu'il a déterminé l'âge et le sexe des squelettes, est de classer les données d'une manière aussi significative et aussi utile que possible pour l'archéologue.
