EPIDERMAL CELLS OF THE PPM (“GOLD SPOTS”) OF THE PUPA OF THE MONARCH BUTTERFLY, DANAUS P. PLEXIPPUS (LEPIDOPTERA: DANAIDAE)

Abstract

The cells composing the tissue of the prismatic pigmented maculae (PPM) of the pupa of the monarch butterfly (Danaus P. plexippus) are described for the first time and their possible functions in the formation of scales and scale pigmentation in the adult butterfly are discussed.
