A review of culture results from non-US casualties in Iraq revealed gram-negative bacteria were the most commonly isolated pathogens. Cultures of respiratory fluid yielded positive results earlier than cultures of wound or blood samples and potentially serve as an earlier marker of future infections. Continued aggressive infection control for non-US casualties is needed.

We assessed the rates of influenza vaccine acceptance and the reasons for acceptance or refusal among medical residents in different disciplines during the 2004-2005 influenza season. Rates varied among disciplines; emergency department residents had the lowest acceptance rate (24%). The perception of a low risk of contracting influenza was the most common reason reported for vaccine refusal.

Mock patient presentations of 6 common syndromic ailments to drug stores in Pratumthani, Thailand, were conducted. Appropriate dispensing of antibiotic therapy for all 6 presentations occurred at 56 (20%) of 280 drug stores. By multivariate analysis, drug stores' proximity to a hospital was associated with appropriate dispensing of antibiotics (adjusted odds ratio, 34 [95% confidence interval, 15–83]; P < .001).
