1 The question has a practical side for the Frenchman. Latin prose is not required of candidates for the ‘Baccalaureat’ but is required for the ‘licence’ and ‘agrégation’ and the absence of previous training in Latin prose in the Lycées is therefore a heavy handicap for University students.
