Introduction

The morphology of the Cardiidae is extremely variable and their taxonomy is uncertain because of the difficulty in recognizing the differences that are genetic and the variations that are due to environmental conditions. This is the reason why Cerastoderma glaucum (Bruguière) (Fig. 1) and C. edule have been for a long time considered as ecotypes of one species or two taxons belonging to a super-species C. edule (Lubet, 1976).
