The workshop delivered in Harrogate and this paper have been created in response to the increased role which legal information professionals are having to take in client handling, promoting themselves and managing conflict within their teams.

This is an overview by Jon Beaumont of the results of his dissertation which examined the impact of changes in copyright law. It also contains a brief history of copyright law and discusses the more significant effects of the Copyright Directive 2001/29/EC.

Nottingham Trent University is a post-1992 University and has one of the largest full service university law schools in the UK. NTU has approximately 1300 undergraduates on our qualifying law degree programme, who are studying either full-time, part-time or via distance learning. Many of the distance learning students on our UK-based LLB actually live overseas, and we also operate a distance learning LLB degree in conjunction with the Open University Hong Kong. In this article, I will mainly concentrate on the impact of these guidelines on libraries, but will also consider the wider impact on law schools and universities as a whole.

The BIALL Code of Good Practice for Law Publishers was launched at the 2005 BIALL Conference. Support for the Code of Good Practice is growing and demonstrates a commitment by legal publishers to respond to the rapidly changing publishing environment. James Mullan Chair of the BIALL Legal Information Group (LIG) provides a history of the Code to date.

Although the United Kingdom has been a member of the European Union for three decades, there has so far been little reference to Continental law and legal systems in British law library literature. I hope that this article will help to begin filling that gap.

Over-paid, over-worked, and over here? From a trickle of firms arriving in the UK 50 years or so ago, US law firms are now a noisy presence in the London and wider European legal marketplace. They are expected by some estimates to commandeer 10% of the UK legal market within the next couple of years. Linda Maynard examines what it is like working in such a firm, in particular, looking at multi-site law firm management from the fringes rather than the centre.

The Estonian legal system has over the last decade and a half undergone a tremendous change. Quite often we have had to start from almost nothing and to develop our law very fast compared to societies with long lasting traditions of stable and well established democracy where similar reforms have taken hundreds of years instead of ten. The years that have passed since the reestablishment of Estonia's independence are characterised by reforms of the legal system, preparation for them, and finally their implementation. All these activities have stemmed from a single underlying idea - to develop a legal order appropriate to a democratic state based on the rule of law. Reforms in public and private law as well as in penal law were finalised ten years after the entry into force of the Constitution of the Republic of Estonia in 1992.

Following an introduction to the Hungarian legal system, highlighting some of the main events of the history of the Hungarian state and Hungarian law and reviewing the system of Hungarian legislation, this article provides sources of legal information in Hungary, including the most important acts, reference books, legal periodicals and sources of legal information in printed and electronic form and on the internet. It has been contributed by Tamás Böszörményi, Eszter Horváth, Tibor Kövér and Krisztina Orphanides.

Victor Monakhov and Anita Soboleva analyse the current development of legal standards in the area of access to information and protection of personal data in the Russian Federation. At the end of 2005 Russia ratified the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data. At the same time several new laws, intended to harmonize national privacy legislation with this Convention and to define the legal status of different databases, which are being created by the state for the purposes of registration of population and identification of persons, passed the first reading in the State Duma. The article reflects the ongoing debates on the scope of the right to know and the right to keep secret in the Russian context.
