The Australian Microscopy and Microanalysis Society encourages you to join us at the 19th International Microscopy Congress (IMC19) to be held 9–14 September 2018 at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Sydney, Australia. Set against the impressive downtown Sydney skyline, the ICC is Australia’s finest and largest convention and exhibition venue featuring fully integrated world-class technology. The Congress theme, “Microscopy: Bridging the Sciences,” will bring together more than 2,000 researchers, as well as decision makers, national microscopy societies, industry partners, and stakeholders involved in microscopy from all over the world.

World-renowned plenary speakers, Dr. Misty Jenkins of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Prof. Dan Shechtman of the Technion, Assoc. Prof. Jennifer Dionne of Stanford University, and Prof. Zhiwei Shan of Xi’an Jiaotong University will bring a wealth of microscopy knowledge as they represent Australia, Israel, United States, and China, respectively. Dr. Misty Jenkins is a NHMRC RD Wright fellow and laboratory head in the Immunology Division at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research, where she researches cellular immunology and cancer immunotherapy. Distinguished Professor Dan Shechtman, of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2011. His current research efforts include developing strong and ductile magnesium alloys for a variety of applications. He is an honorary member of professional societies around the globe and was awarded many prizes including the Wolf Prize in Physics, the Gregori Aminoff Prize of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and the EMRS Award. Jennifer Dionne is an associate professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University. Associate Professor Dionne’s research develops new optical materials and microscopies to observe, with nanoscale resolution, chemical and biological processes as they unfold. She then uses these observations to help improve energy-relevant processes (such as photocatalysis and energy storage), medical diagnostics, and therapeutics. Professor Zhiwei Shan is currently the Dean of School of Materials Science and Engineering at Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU). His main research interests include the size effect on mechanical behavior of materials, hydrogen embrittlement, and magnesium-based advanced materials.

The 19th International Microscopy Congress program will showcase exciting new developments in microscopy and demonstrate the transformational role of microscopy in underpinning a range of physical and life sciences. Encompassing four main streams—Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Instrumentation and Techniques, and Frontier Issues—outcomes from IMC19 will send ripples across the microscopy community worldwide for many years. The Congress is your chance to meet and interact with the world’s most inspiring and prominent invited speakers who will present on various symposia topics including Structure and Function of Cells and Organelles; Metals and Alloys; Data Management (Storage, Processing and Sharing); and In-situ, Environmental, and Time-Resolved Microscopies. Over 1,500 contributing authors will present their research and findings through a range of informational platforms, including digital posters and oral presentations.

Our Scientific Program Committees have embraced emerging trends in Congress design, and we are pleased to introduce digital posters to the Congress to showcase scientific research, in addition to traditional hard-copy posters. Digital posters will be accessible via the Congress app, providing a new level of networking and communication opportunities for our authors and delegates.

A highlight of IMC19, The IFSM Symposium, will take place on Friday September 14th and will include the presentation of IFSM Medal Awards for 2018, as well as special plenary lectures by the awardees. Prof. Joachim Frank, Nobel Prize winner and joint-winner of the Eduard Kellenberger Medal, will be presenting at the IFSM Symposium—an opportunity not to be missed. Prof. Frank is regarded as a co-founder of single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), for which he shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2017 with Jacques Dubochet and Richard Henderson. He also made significant contributions to the structure and function of the ribosome from bacteria and eukaryotes. Prof. Frank will be joined by fellow IFSM Medal awardees who will each present an IFSM Medal Award Plenary Lecture.

Previously known as the IFSM School, the IFSM Young Scientists Assembly (IFSM YSA) is a one-day program exclusive to IFSM Young Scientists. The IFSM YSA will provide 50 young scientists with the valuable opportunity to network with frontline practice leaders in an intimate and streamlined environment. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet Nobel Laureates Joachim Frank and Dan Schechtman in a thought-provoking panel discussion embracing career planning and development. This session also affords the opportunity to network with fellow emerging leaders.

Pre-Congress workshops offer delegates the opportunity to make the most of their time at IMC19 by extending their knowledge in areas such as correlative microscopy, atom probe microscopy, data visualisation and analysis, and sample preparation. The workshops will be held offsite at local universities and will provide these universities an opportunity to showcase their facilities and resources.

The IMC19 exhibition is predicted to be the biggest microscopy exhibition of its kind, showcasing the latest generation of microscopy technology from over 65 exhibitors. With over 1,000 square meters of space, the exhibition will be highly interactive with catering stations, digital and hard copy posters, mini oral theatrettes, a dedicated meeting room . . . and did we mention coffee carts? This exhibition will be the nucleus of IMC19, showcasing several first-time features for the Congress. We look forward to sharing this truly engaging experience with you.
