FS Aurigae is famous for a variety of uncommon and puzzling periodic photometric and spectroscopic variabilities which do not fit well into any of the established sub-classes of cataclysmic variables. Here we present preliminary results of long-term monitoring of the system, conducted during the 2010-2011 observational season. We show that the long-term variability of FS Aur and the character of its outburst activity may be caused by variations in the mass transfer rate from the secondary star as the result of eccentricity modulation of a close binary orbit induced by the presence of a third body on a circumbinary orbit.

Based on our multi-dimensional neutrino-radiation hydrodynamic simulations, we report several cutting-edge issues about the long-veiled explosion mechanism of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe). In this contribution, we pay particular attention to whether three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamics and/or general relativity (GR) would or would not help the onset of explosions. Our results from the first generation of full GR 3D simulations including approximate neutrino transport are quite optimistic, indicating that both of the two ingredients can foster neutrino-driven explosions. We give an outlook with a summary of the most urgent tasks to draw a robust conclusion to our findings.

The evolution of the turbulent properties in the solar wind, during the travel of the parcels of fluid from the Sun to the outer heliosphere still has several unanswered questions. In this work, we will present results of an study on the dynamical evolution of turbulent magnetic fluctuations in the inner heliosphere. We focused on the anisotropy of the turbulence integral scale, measured parallel and perpendicular to the direction of the local mean magnetic field, and study its evolution according to the aging of the plasma parcels observed at different heliodistances. As diagnostic tool we employed single-spacecraft correlation functions computed with observations collected by Helios 1 & 2 probes over nearly one solar cycle. Our results are consistent with driving modes with wave-vectors parallel to the direction of the local mean magnetic field near the Sun, and a progressive spectral transfer of energy to modes with perpendicular wave-vectors. Advances made in this direction, as those presented here, will contribute to our understanding of the magnetohydrodynamical turbulence and Alfvénic-wave activity for this system, and will provide a quantitative input for models of charged solar and galactic energetic particles propagation and diffusion throughout the inner heliosphere.

The AAVSO is initiating a new survey of the sky. It will cover the entire visible sky, both north and south, on a daily basis, in two colours, and with a limiting magnitude of V = 17. This will be a perfect complement to LSST, but will be available years earlier and will continue into the indefinite future. The photometry will be publicly available within 24 hours through our website. Some details of the hardware and operations are described.

The observation of evolved stars in selected evolutionary stages allow us to track the evolution of the physical properties and chemical composition of the matter that is being returned to the interstellar medium during these last stages of the life of stars. While the dust component can be characterized through the observation of the spectral energy distribution in the infrared part of the spectrum, spectral line surveys carried out in a wide spectral band provide the best probe of the physical properties and chemical composition of the gas phase. In this lecture we review the different line surveys carried out toward these objects and their impact in our understanding of the chemical complexity evolution in the circumstellar envelopes around evolved stars.

We review the first results of a dedicated, on-going monitoring project for supersoft X-ray source (SSS) states of classical novae (CNe) in the central region of the Andromeda galaxy (M 31). So far, during three high-cadence observation campaigns with the X-ray telescopes XMM-Newton and Chandra from 2006 until 2009 we detected 21 CNe, only four of which were seen in X-rays before. This increased the total number of known CNe with X-ray counterparts in M 31 to 60, which is significantly larger than for any other galaxy, including the Milky Way. We compiled a catalog of X-ray and optical properties for these 60 sources which allowed us to perform source statistics and population studies of CNe with SSS state in M 31 for the first time. Here we review the results of this analysis: (i) several correlations between X-ray and optical parameters, (ii) an analysis of the intrinsic fraction of CNe with SSS state, and (iii) the first nova population study in X-rays. Our first results are promising, however a continuing monitoring of the unique target M 31 is strongly needed to extend this valuable data base and to refine the early statements and predictions.

AGB stars appear to lose mass spherically, but many PNe resulting from the AGB mass-loss have non-spherical morphologies. Compact disks have been found in some bipolar PNe, but their role in the shaping process remains unknown. Compact Keplerian disks are found to be common around post-AGB binaries, however, these objects may never develop into PNe. Another group of post-AGB stars, known as pre-PNe, are surrounded by collimated nebulae shining by reflected light or shock ionisation. We are observing the inner circumstellar regions of pre-PNe at high angular resolutions with the VLTI. We seek to compare pre-PNe disks to those around other post-AGB stars and PNe. New observations of the pre-PN, IRAS 16279-4757, show evidence for a disk similar to those seen in young PNe.

Optical/UV photons and even harder radiation components in galaxies are absorbed and scattered by dust and re-emitted at infrared wavelengths. For a better understanding of the obscured regions of the galaxies detailed models of the interaction of photons with dust grains and the propagation of light are required. A problem which can only be solved by means of numerical solution of the radiative transfer equation. As a prologue we present high angular mid IR observations of galactic nuclei in the spirit of future ELT instrumentation. Dust models are discussed, which are suited to fit the extinction curves and relevant to compute the emission of external galaxies. Self-consistent radiative transfer models have been presented in spherical symmetry for starburst nuclei, in two dimensions for disk galaxies (spirals) and, more recently, in three dimensional configuration of the dust density distribution. For the latter, a highlighting example is the clumpy dust tori around AGN. Modern advances in the field are reviewed which are either based on a more detailed physical picture or progress in computational sciences.

The Maya 2012 prophecy foretells events that will occur at the close of the current Maya ‘era’ and at the end of the 13th BˈAKTUN period of the Maya calendar. This paper explores the mythic and astronomical events that occurred previously at the start of the Maya era in 3114 BC corresponding to the close of the first 13-BˈAKTUN period. These two 13-BˈAKTUN Period Endings, separated by a span of approximately 5125 years, are like two bookends on a single shelf that inextricably link ancient Maya conceptions of time, mythic history and prophecy. The following presentation will demonstrate how in this case, the past is very much prologue. Mythic events and godly actions recorded at the beginning of the era directly parallel those actions that will occur at the end of the era. In addition, new insights will be shared into how ancient Maya scribes linked Era Day events to temple dedications and architecture to reflect the sun's daily solar trek—a journey charted and revered by ancient peoples from all corners of the Americas.

Interplanetary conditions during the Cycle 23-24 minimum have attracted attention because they are noticeably different than those during other minima of the space age, exhibiting more solar wind stream interaction structures in addition to reduced mass fluxes and low magnetic field strengths. In this study we consider the differences in the solar wind source regions by applying Potential Field Source Surface models of the coronal magnetic field. In particular, we consider the large scale coronal field geometry that organizes the open field region locations and sizes, and the appearance of the helmet streamer structure that is another determiner of solar wind properties. The recent cycle minimum had an extraordinarily long entry phase (the decline of Cycle 23) that made it difficult to identify when the actual miminum arrived. In particular, the late 23rd cycle was characterized by diminishing photospheric fields and complex coronal structures that took several extra years to simplify to its traditional dipolar solar minimum state. The nearly dipolar phase, when it arrived, had a duration somewhat shorter than those of the previous cycles. The fact that the corona maintained an appearance more like a solar maximum corona through most of the quiet transitional phase between Cycles 23 and 24 gave the impression of a much more complicated solar minimum solar wind structure in spite of the weaknesses of the mass flux and interplanetary field. The extent to which the Cycle 23-24 transition will affect Cycle 24, and/or represents what happens during weak cycles in general, remains to be seen.

We present basic information about package SPHOTOM for an automatic multicolour photometry. This package is in development for the creation of a photometric pipe-line, which we plan to use in the near future with our new instruments. It could operate in two independent modes, (i) GUI mode, in which the user can select images and control functions of package through interface and (ii) command line mode, in which all processes are controlled using a main parameter file. SPHOTOM is developed as a universal package for Linux based systems with easy implementation for different observatories. The photometric part of the package is based on the Sextractor code, which allows us to detect all objects on the images and perform their photometry with different apertures. We can also perform astrometric solutions for all images for a correct cross-identification of the stars on the images. The result is a catalogue of all objects with their instrumental photometric measurements which are consequently used for a differential magnitudes calculations with one or more comparison stars, transformations to an international system, and determinations of colour indices.

Speculation about what ancient Maya texts have to say about 2012 is becoming a global phenomenon in popular culture. This speculation, largely apocalyptic, is more often based on acquaintance with historical Western interpretations than on familiarity with the texts themselves and their cultural contexts. This paper approaches the 2012 phenomenon through close readings of Maya texts and images considered within the contexts of historical and contemporary Maya culture and Western scholarship. It focuses on images of mythological events depicted on two Late Classic Maya vessels: the ‘Vase of the Seven Gods’ (Kerr no. 2796) and the ‘Vase of the Eleven Gods’ (Kerr no. 7750). These images are interpreted as representing deities, gathered in ‘cosmogonic conclave’, preparing to re-create the world with their sacrifices at the last completion of a great cycle and the beginning of a new 5,125-year 13-Bakˈtun Maya ‘Long Count’. The rites of passage are presided over by an enigmatic Venus-warrior/sacrificer deity previously known only as God L. God L's principal name and nature had remained undeciphered and his identity obscure until the author's researches resulted in the decipherment and ‘reading’ presented here. This study offers an explication of why God L, whom the author has demonstrated is the Maya god of tobacco among his many aspects, takes the senior role in presiding over these 13-Bakˈtun completion rituals and why it is reasonable to hypothesize that the same entities would be back for the fulfillment of the present cycle in 2012.

We present a brief description of the Berkeley Visible Imaging Tube (BVIT) detector system, which is a user instrument on the 10-m Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), and include some preliminary observational results gained in mid-2011. The data show that BVIT is capable of revealing emission features occurring on time-scales of < 0.1 sec, thus opening up for the general user a window of high time-resolution astronomy at visible wavelengths.

The Sombrero galaxy (M104) is an interesting object for a dust energy balance study due to its very symmetric dust lane, its proximity and its (nearly edge-on) inclination of 84°. From a panchromatic radiative transfer analysis, including scattering, absorption and thermal dust re-emission, we construct a standard model for M104 accounting for observations in the optical wave bands (stellar SED, images and extinction profiles in the V and RC band). This standard model underestimates the observed dust emission at infrared wavelengths by a factor of ~ 3, similar to the discrepancy found in other energy balance studies of edge-on spirals. Supplementing this standard model with a young stellar component of low star formation activity in both the inner disk (SFR ~ 0.21 M⊙ yr−1) and dust ring (SFR ~ 0.05 M⊙ yr−1), we are capable of solving the discrepancy in the dust energy budget of the Sombrero galaxy at wavelengths shortwards of 100 μm. To account for the remaining discrepancy at longer wavelengths, we propose a secondary dust component distributed in quiescent clumps. This model with a clumpy dust structure predicts three-quarters of the total dust content to reside in compact dust clouds with no associated embedded sources.

The giant planets of our solar system contain a record of elemental and isotopic ratios of keen interest for what they tell us about the origin of the planets and in particular the volatile compositions of the solid phases. In situ measurements of the Jovian atmosphere performed by the Galileo Probe during its descent in 1995 demonstrate the unique value of such a record, but limited currently by the unknown abundance of oxygen in the interior of Jupiter–a gap planned to be filled by the Juno mission set to arrive at Jupiter in July of 2016. Our lack of knowledge of the oxygen abundance allows for a number of models for the Jovian interior with a range of C/O ratios. The implications for the origin of terrestrial water are briefly discussed. The complementary data sets for Saturn may be obtained by a series of very close, nearly polar orbits, at the end of the Cassini-Huygens mission in 2016-2017, and the proposed Saturn Probe. This set can only obtain what we have for Jupiter if the Saturn Probe mission carries a microwave radiometer.

V479 And is a 14.26 hour, close binary system, comprised of a G8-K0 star departing from the main sequence and a compact primary star accreting matter from the donor. The object is an X-ray source, modulated with the orbital period. This, and the presence of an intense He II line, leads us to speculate that the compact object is a magnetic white dwarf. However, we do not find strong constraints on the upper mass limit of the compact object, and we may have a neutron star in a low mass X-ray binary instead of a cataclysmic variable. The orbital period is certainly too short for the donor star to be an evolved giant star, so classifying this object as a symbiotic binary may be a big stretch; however there is an evidence that the mass transfer occurs via stellar winds, rather than through the L1 point of Roche filling secondary, a phenomenon more common for symbiotic stars.

We review gas-phase abundances in PNe and describe their dual utility as archives of original progenitor metallicity via the α elements, as well as sources of processed material from nucleosynthesis during the star's evolution, i.e., C, N, and s-process elements. We describe the analysis of PN spectra to derive abundances and discuss the discrepancies that arise from different choices at each step. Abundance results for the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds from various groups of investigators are presented; the observational results are compared with theoretical predictions of AGB stellar yields. Finally, we suggest areas where more work is needed to improve our abilities to determine abundances in PNe.

Commission 29 consists of members of the International Astronomical Union carrying out theoretical and observational studies of stars using spectroscopy, developing instrumentation for spectroscopy and producing and collecting data for interpretation of spectra.

Massive stars end their life with the gravitational collapse of their core and the formation of a neutron star. Their explosion as a supernova depends on the revival of a spherical accretion shock, located in the inner 200km and stalled during a few hundred milliseconds. Numerical simulations suggest that the large scale asymmetry of the neutrino-driven explosion is induced by a hydrodynamical instability named SASI. Its non radial character is able to influence the kick and the spin of the resulting neutron star. The SWASI experiment is a simple shallow water analog of SASI, where the role of acoustic waves and shocks is played by surface waves and hydraulic jumps. Distances in the experiment are scaled down by a factor one million, and time is slower by a factor one hundred. This experiment is designed to illustrate the asymmetric nature of core-collapse supernova.
