Summary
The loss of the West Bank and the civil war with the PLO was not the end of the Palestinian issue in Jordanian history. Related issues, such as the nature of the representation of the Palestinian population in the East Bank, and who would speak for the Palestinians in peace-oriented diplomacy, had still to be decided. King Hussein would battle hard over this subject, both with the PLO within the regional Arab framework and later with the Americans, as their emerging peace diplomacy eventually led to the Egyptian–Israeli peace process. In the meantime, the regional oil boom helped to ameliorate some of these tensions at home, through increased prosperity and predominantly Palestinian labour migration to the Gulf.
