Summary

Fortunately, the need to insert a chest drain during paediatric retrievals is rare (<1% of retrievals). However, when necessary, a chest drain may need to be inserted quickly and safely, to prevent further deterioration. Pleural collections can compromise both the respiratory and cardiac systems. Most children with a chest drain will subsequently require transfer to a tertiary PICU or respiratory centre for ongoing management of their chest drain.
