There is no satisfactory general history of Brazil from 1930 to the present day. Israel Beloch and Alzira Alves de Abreu (eds.), Ditionário histórico-bibliográfico brasileiro, 1930–1983, 4 vols. (Rio de Janeiro, 1984) is an indispensable guide. It is the most ambitious and substantial of a large number of important contributions from the Centro de Pesquisas e Documentaçao em História Contemporânea (CPDOC) of the Fundaç, ao Getúlio Vargas (FGV) in Rio de Janeiro, the creation of which in 1973 transformed the study of contemporary Brazilian history. For the period from the revolution of 1930 to the golpe of 1964 Boris Fausto (ed.), História geral da civilizaçdo brasileira, III: 0 Brasil republicano, 3. Sociedade epolitica (1930– 64), 4. Economia e cultura (1930–64) (Sao Paulo, 1981, 1984) is an outstanding collaborative history.
