The interaction of focused high power laser beam with solid targets leads to acceleration of charged particles among other by non-linear effects in the plasma. In this experiment, the hot electrons are characterized from the interaction of sub-nanosecond and kilo-joule class laser pulse with thin metal foil targets (Cu, Ta, Ti, Sn, Pb). The energy distribution functions of electrons were measured by angularly resolved multichannel electron spectrometer. The hot electron temperatures were observed in range from 30 to 80 keV for laser intensities between ${\sim}10^{15}$ and $3 \times 10^{16}\ \mathrm{W\,cm^{-2}}$. The measured energy distribution and electron temperature were compared with published results and known scaling laws at higher laser intensities. For foil targets of different materials, the temperature and flux of hot electrons were scaled with target thickness in the range of 1–100 $\unicode{x03BC}\mathrm{m}$ from low Z to high Z materials where Z is the atomic number. The profile of conversion efficiency from laser energy to hot electrons is discussed in the energy range from 100 to 600 J. For the given laser and target parameters, the nonlinear behaviour of conversion efficiency and relevant physics are also described in detail.

Resistance to carbaryl, lindane and methidathion was studied in field and laboratory strains of Dysdercus fasciatus Sign., D. nigrofasciatus Stål, D. superstitiosits (F.) and D. cardinalis Gerst. from Kenya. Four-day old fifth-instar female nymphs were found to be the most convenient for bioassay. The LC50s of carbaryl, lindane and methidathion for D. fasciatus were 372, 240, and 110 mg/litre, respectively, those for D. nigrofasciatus 337, 294, and 111 mg/litre, and that for carbaryl for D. cardinalis 147 mg/litre. The Meru and Ngwata strains of D. fasciatus had resistance factors of ×5·3 and ×6·1, respectively, to carbaryl. The field strains of all four species showed slight resistance (up to ×3·4) to lindane and methidathion. The poor control of Dysdercus spp. experienced in Eastern Province, Kenya, is probably due to the development of resistance to carbaryl. A laboratory and a field strain of each of D. fasciatus and D. nigrofasciatus were subjected to carbaryl selection pressure for six generations of doses equivalent to the LC50-LC70. The laboratory strain of D. fasciatus was also subjected to lindane selection for six generations. The laboratory and field strains of D. fasciatus developed resistance to carbaryl of ×3·7 and ×5·7, respectively, and cross-resistance to lindane of up to ×2·7. No significant increase in resistance was observed in D. nigrofasciatus after selection. The laboratory strain of D. fasciatus developed resistance to lindane of ×5·5 after selection and cross-resistance to carbaryl of ×4·3.

Gluten sensitive enteropathy has various manifestations, of which the two major forms are classical coeliac disease (cCD) and dermatitis herpetiformis (DH). In cCD predominantly the small intestine is affected, whereas in DH also the skin is affected showing typical rash and IgA deposits. The symptoms in both forms are dependent on gluten intake. The factors diversifying these two clinical outcomes are unknown. In the present report we evaluated the role of the major genetic susceptibility locus, HLA DQ, in 25 families, in which both forms of the disease, cCD and DH, occurred in siblings. By using the family-based approach it can be assumed that within each family variation in environmental factors is substantially lower than in the standard case-control setting, and also the problems related to population stratification can be avoided. Results from the Finnish family material with 25 discordant and 85 concordant sib pairs, and from additional case-control material comprising 71 unrelated Hungarian DH and 68 cCD patients, together indicated that the HLA DQ locus did not differ between the two major outcomes of gluten sensitive enteropathy. The non-HLA DR;DQ factors are critical for the different clinical manifestations of gluten sensitivity.

Studies in psychophysiology and behavioral medicine have uncovered associations among psychological processes, behavior, and lung function. However, methodological issues specific to the measurement of mechanical lung function have rarely been discussed. This report presents an overview of the physiology, techniques, and experimental methods of mechanical lung function measurements relevant to this research context. Techniques to measure lung volumes, airflow, airway resistance, respiratory resistance, and airflow perception are introduced and discussed. Confounding factors such as ventilation, medication, environmental factors, physical activity, and instructional and experimenter effects are outlined, and issues specific to children and clinical groups are discussed. Recommendations are presented to increase the degree of standardization in the research application and publication of mechanical lung function measurements in psychophysiology.

A lithium reduction technique to condition spent fuel for disposal has been developed at the Argonne National Laboratory. There is a need to ensure adequate vessel longevity through corrosion testing and, if necessary, materials development. Several ferrous alloys and tantalum specimens were submitted to a corrosion test at 725 °C for thirty days in an argon atmosphere, using a lithium-chloride salt saturated with lithium metal and containing small amounts of lithium oxide and lithium nitride. The samples did not show dimensional or weight change, nor could corrosion attack be detected metallographically. The lithium-saturated salt system did not show any behavior similar to that of liquid lithium corrosion. From testing in other gas compositions, it appears that the presence of oxygen in the system is necessary to produce severe corrosion.

Ab initio Hartree-Fock and second-order Möller-Plesset theory calculations have been performed to investigate the stability of triply-coordinated 0+ centers in the Si-O-Si network of amorphous SiO2. The calculations reveal that the H+ ion binds with a bridging O center to form a very stable (De > 6 eV) trivalent O complex. Capture of an electron by the positively charged protonated complex, however, is predicted to immediately lead to the dissociation of the O-H bond. A relatively weaker, but stable bond is also formed between the bridging O atom and a +SiH3 ion.

Interest has steadily increased among logicians and philosophers in versions of quantification theory which meet the following criteria: (1) no existence assumptions are made with respect to individual constants, and (2) theorems are valid in every domain including the empty domain. Logics meeting the former of these criteria are called free logics by Lambert and have been investigated in a series of papers by him and by van Fraassen, and by Leblanc and Thomason.1
Although it is natural to impose (2) in the presence of (1), the criteria are independent.2 Hence we baptize logics which meet both criteria universally free.
