Who joins extremist movements? Answering this question is beset by methodological challenges as survey techniques are infeasible and selective samples provide no counterfactual. Recruits can be assigned to contextual units, but this is vulnerable to problems of ecological inference. In this article, we elaborate a technique that combines survey and ecological approaches. The Bayesian hierarchical case–control design that we propose allows us to identify individual-level and contextual factors patterning the incidence of recruitment to extremism, while accounting for spatial autocorrelation, rare events, and contamination. We empirically validate our approach by matching a sample of Islamic State (ISIS) fighters from nine MENA countries with representative population surveys enumerated shortly before recruits joined the movement. High-status individuals in their early twenties with college education were more likely to join ISIS. There is more mixed evidence for relative deprivation. The accompanying extremeR package provides functionality for applied researchers to implement our approach.

Complex domestic airspace requires collision risk models and monitoring tools suitable for arbitrary aircraft trajectories. This paper presents a new mathematically based collision risk approach that extends the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) models to full aircraft encounters based on real trajectory data. A new continuous time intervention model is presented, along with a position uncertainty propagation model that better reflects aircraft behaviour and allows generalisation to all trajectories to eliminate degenerate cases. The proposed risk model is computationally efficient compared to the models it is based on and can be applied to large-scale trajectory data. The utility of the model is demonstrated through a series of case studies using real aircraft trajectories.

Summary
Endophytes have the potential to contribute to the sustainable production of bioenergy crops such as the perennial rhizomatous grass Miscanthus. They can improve plant growth on marginal land that is otherwise unsuitable for conventional agriculture and can also reduce the need for environmentally damaging chemical inputs including fertilisers and pesticides. This chapter outlines current knowledge of Miscanthus endophytes and presents new data on the diversity of root and shoot fungal endophytes isolated from three Miscanthus species (M. sacchariflorus, M. sinensis and M. ×giganteus). Malt extract, potato dextrose and Czapek Dox media were compared for isolation and growth of the endophytes. The endophytes were then identified using DNA barcoding with three DNA loci (nrITS, nrLSU and TEF). nrITS and nrLSU were found to be the most reliable and consistent barcoding regions. Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) had the highest discriminating potential and is thus recommended for single locus barcoding of endophytes in Miscanthus. Most new isolates were Ascomycota belonging to Pezizomycotina with representatives from Dothideomycetes, Eurotiomycetes and Sordariomycetes. One Basidiomycota species was recovered (a known soil yeast Rhodotorula). Comparisons between Miscanthus endophyte species composition and its better-known sister genus Saccharum (including sugarcane) are provided.

Schizophrenia, a debilitating mental illness affecting roughly 1 percent of the population worldwide, is widely accepted as being highly genetically influenced (Cardno et al., 1999; Gershon et al., 1988; Kendler and Diehl, 1993). Schizophrenia is often marked by distortions of reality, disorganized thought, emotional blunting, and/or social isolation that may interfere with optimal functioning (Cornblatt et al., 2012). Schizophrenia may be associated with creativity, although research findings are mixed (e.g., Andreasen, 2011; Kyaga et al., 2013). Evidence also points to adverse effects on fertility and reproductive success among (particularly) males with schizophrenia (Svensson et al., 2007), in part accounted for by marital status (McCabe et al., 2009), suggesting potential biological and social influences. Collectively, this raises an intriguing potential evolutionary puzzle: How does schizophrenia persist in the population at a stable prevalence rate too high to be explained by simple random mutation? (Doi et al., 2009; see also Del Giudice et al., 2010). Among various hypotheses, including in the context of the emerging field of evolutionary epidemiology, schizophrenia may represent “one extreme of a sexually selected fitness factor” (Shaner et al., 2004).

Present and past gas-fuelling of galaxies is expected to depend upon both the properties of the galaxies themselves, as well as their larger-scale environments. In the case of galaxies in groups the environment, i.e the group mass, can be probed by measuring the velocity dispersion of the group members, as done with the GAMA Galaxy Group catalogue (Robotham et al. 2011), probing the halo mass function all the way to small groups. The gas-fuelling rate of normal late-type galaxies can be traced by the SFR under the assumption of a steady state between gas-fuelling and gas-consumption by SF. We present a method to estimate disk opacities from UV/optical photometric characteristics, calibrated using the radiative transfer model of Popescu et al. (2011), applied to UV-Opt-FIR GAMA/H-ATLAS photometry for a subset of GAMA galaxies. We use the method to extract attenuation corrected SFRs for a large sample of late-type GAMA galaxies, which we use in an initial application to constrain the dependency of star formation/gas-fuelling in late-type galaxies on mass of parent DMH, and compactness of galaxy group.

The initiation and detonation properties of explosives are often empirically correlated to density, surface area, and particle size. Although these correlations are sometimes used successfully to predict the performance of bulk samples, the data are spatially averaged, which unfortunately muddles information critical to understanding fundamental processes. Density and surface area are essentially an indirect measure of porosity, which is arguably a more appropriate metric in many applications. We report the direct characterization of porosity in polycrystalline molecular crystal explosives by focused ion beam nanotomography, a technique that is typically reserved for robust materials such as ceramics and metals. The resulting three-dimensional microstructural data are incredibly rich, promising a substantial advance in our ability to unravel the processes governing initiation and detonation of molecular crystal explosives. In a larger context, this work demonstrates that focused ion beam nanotomography may be successfully extended to the investigation of nanoscale porosity in other molecular crystal or polymer materials.

Summary
Humor is an important part of the human condition. A world without laughter would be a world without a soul. Indeed, comedy serves many key purposes in life – reducing stress, defusing social tensions, revealing the absurdity of human behavior, and generally increasing the quality of life (Martin, 2007). One main vehicle by which funny thoughts are conveyed is through creative writing, which can blunt the edge of potentially controversial topics, evoke feelings of mirth in the reader, and contribute to increasing the audience's health through laughter.
Comedy writing takes many forms: stand-up comedy writing, sitcom writing, political satire writing as seen on The Daily Show, comedy screenwriting, comedy writing for Web sites like Cracked or The Onion, and literary fiction writing with a humorous bent. It varies from the attempts of a novice short story writer to the aesthetic achievements of Cervantes, Rabelais, and Shakespeare. Indeed, nearly any form of creative writing can be enhanced by humor.
But behind every punch line is a person generating that line. What do we know about comedy writers? What are they like? Humor has been the subject of a great deal of speculation and, more recently, a rather impressive array of empirical research (Martin, 2007) on a variety of humor-related topics.
