Summary
The Odes of Solomon consist of forty-two short poems. Their provenance, date, and original language are all disputed. At least some of the Odes must have been written before the third century since Ode 11 is found in Greek in Papyrus Bodmer XI, which is datable to the third century, and since Lactantius (ca. 240–ca. 320) includes a quotation of Ode 19 in Latin translation in his Divinarum Institutionum (IV.xii.3). Parts of five odes (1.1–5, 5.1–11, 6.8–18, 22.1–12, and 25.1–12) are also found in Coptic translation in the Pistis Sophia, which is preserved in a single Coptic manuscript, probably from the fourth or fifth century, though scholars think the Pistis Sophia itself goes back to the third or fourth century. The Syriac tradition preserves the most complete witness to the Odes of Solomon, albeit in later manuscripts: Odes 17–42 are extant in a Syriac manuscript datable to the tenth century, and Odes 3–42 in a Syriac manuscript datable to the fifteenth to seventeenth century.

Summary
Simeon of Beth Arsham, who is known as the “Persian Debater,” was a defender of miaphysite Christology during the first half of the sixth century. The miaphysite position insisted on a formulation with one nature in Christ in contrast to the dyophysite (“two natures”) position, whether Chalcedonian or not. Simeon is one of the theologians, who, along with Philoxenos of Mabbug (d. 523), Severus of Antioch (d. 538), John of Tella (d. 538), and Jacob Burdʿoyo (d. 578), played a role in the eventual development of a distinct miaphysite church in the aftermath of the Council of Chalcedon (451).

Summary
The Ascension of Isaiah imagines Isaiah’s tour of the seven heavens, the descent of Christ through the divine realms in the form of an angel, and the death of the prophet at the hands of King Hezekiah’s wicked son, Manasseh. This enigmatic work falls into two main parts: the martyrdom of Isaiah (chapters 1–5) and the vision of Isaiah (chapters 6–11). There is no consensus about the date, composition, or provenance of the Ascension of Isaiah. A 1996 monograph on the text stresses the unity of the work and locates it in the second century CE, probably in Syria.1 This all, however, remains disputed.

Summary
Jacob of Serugh, who is known as “the Flute of the Holy Spirit and the Harp of the Church,” was an influential West Syriac poet. He was born ca. 451 in Kurtam on the Euphrates. At an unknown date Jacob was appointed regional bishop of Ḥawra, and then in 519 he was consecrated bishop of Baṭnan da-Serugh. He died shortly thereafter, perhaps on November 29, 521 (different dates are found in the sources). Jacob is best known as the author of a large number of metrical homilies: almost 400 survive out of the more than 760 that he is said to have written. These treat a variety of topics, with retellings of biblical passages being by far the most common. With some notable exceptions, such as his Metrical Homily on the Council of Chalcedon, Jacob’s metrical homilies do not in general address directly the tumultuous theological, especially Christological, controversies of his day. This is not, however, the case for the forty or so extant letters by Jacob (some of which are only partially preserved).
