Amorphous TiO2 and SnO2 electron transport layers (ETLs) were deposited by low-temperature atomic layer deposition (ALD). Surface morphology and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicate uniform and pinhole free coverage of these ALD hole blocking layers. Both mesoporous and planar perovskite solar cells were fabricated based on these thin films with aperture areas of 1.04 cm2 for TiO2 and 0.09 cm2 and 0.70 cm2 for SnO2. The resulting cell performance of 18.3 % power conversion efficiency (PCE) using planar SnO2 on 0.09 cm2 and 15.3 % PCE using mesoporous TiO2 on 1.04 cm2 active areas are discussed in conjunction with the significance of growth parameters and ETL composition.

Understanding the habitat preferences of native and non-native species may offer valuable insights into the mechanisms favouring invasion of disturbed habitats. This study investigated the determinants of trap-site detection probability of three native (Maxomys surifer, Maxomys whiteheadi and Leopoldamys sabanus) and one invasive (Rattus rattus) species of terrestrial murid (Muridae) in logged and unlogged forests of northern Borneo. We established four and two trapping grids in repeatedly logged and unlogged forest, respectively, for a total of 500 sampled trap sites. From these, we obtained 504 detections of the four species over 3420 trap nights. For each species, probability of detection was modelled as a function of both the structural components and disturbance level of the forest patch measured around each trap site. Each of the four species showed contrasting microhabitat preferences: M. surifer favoured increased canopy closure and intermediate ground and understorey vegetation cover; M. whiteheadi preferred increased ground vegetation cover and canopy height; L. sabanus favoured sites with larger amounts of coarse woody debris and less leaf litter; and R. rattus was associated with increased ground vegetation cover. Within logged forest, detection probabilities of the three native species did not vary significantly with level of patch disturbance, whereas that of the invasive R. rattus increased markedly in more degraded sites. This latter finding will have increasingly important implications when considering the rapid degradation of forests in the region, and the resulting expansion of suitable habitat for this competitive species.

The growth hormone (GH)–insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) axis is dramatically altered in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). The aim of the present study was to investigate whether GH and IGF-1 could be predictors of outcome in patients with a restrictive form of AN. Blood levels of GH, IGF-1, adipocytokines, ghrelin, insulin, glucose, and sex and thyroid hormones were measured in eleven women inpatients with AN and in ten healthy women controls. Three stages were compared during refeeding: admission (T0), when BMI reached 16 kg/m2 (T1) and at discharge when BMI reached 17·5 kg/m2 (T2). Clinical status was assessed 6 months after discharge from hospital (T3), and remission was defined by the maintenance of a BMI ≥ 17·5 kg/m2. AN patients in remission (AN-R; n 6) had significantly higher GH levels at admission than those who relapsed (AN-NR; n 5) (P< 0·05). During refeeding (Δ = T2 − T0), the AN-R group differed from the AN-NR group only by both GH level decrease (P< 0·05) and BMI increase (P< 0·05). In multiple regression analysis, ΔGH was associated negatively and significantly and Δleptin and Δbody fat mass levels were associated positively and significantly with BMI at T3 and explained 88 % of its variability (r2 0·88, P< 0·05). The present study suggests that a low GH level at admission and the absence of its decrease after weight recovery could predict short-term relapse in women suffering from a restrictive form of AN.

Background.
Multidisciplinary antimicrobial utilization teams (AUTs) have been proposed as a mechanism for improving antimicrobial use, but data on their efficacy remain limited.
Objective. To determine the impact of an AUT on antimicrobial use at a teaching hospital.
Design.Randomized controlled intervention trial.
Setting.A 953-bed, public, university-affiliated, urban teaching hospital.
Patients.Patients who were given selected antimicrobial agents (piperacillin-tazobactam, levofloxacin, or vancomycin) by internal medicine ward teams.
Intervention.Twelve internal medicine teams were randomly assigned monthly: 6 teams to an intervention group (academic detailing by the AUT) and 6 teams to a control group that was given indication-based guidelines for prescription of broad-spectrum antimicrobials (standard of care), during a 10-month study period.
Measurements.Proportion of appropriate empirical, definitive (therapeutic), and end (overall) antimicrobial usage.
Results.A total of 784 new prescriptions of piperacillin-tazobactam, levofloxacin, and vancomycin were reviewed. The proportion of antimicrobial prescriptions written by the intervention teams that was considered to be appropriate was significantly higher than the proportion of antimicrobial prescriptions written by the control teams that was considered to be appropriate: 82% versus 73% for empirical (risk ratio [RR], 1.14; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04-1.24), 82% versus 43% for definitive (RR, 1.89; 95% CI, 1.53-2.33), and 94% versus 70% for end antimicrobial usage (RR, 1.34; 95% CI, 1.25-1.43). In multivariate analysis, teams that received feedback from the AUT alone (adjusted RR, 1.37; 95% CI, 1.27-1.48) or from both the AUT and the infectious diseases consultation service (adjusted RR, 2.28; 95% CI, 1.64-3.19) were significantiy more likely to prescribe end antimicrobial usage appropriately, compared with control teams.
Conclusions.A multidisciplinary AUT that provides feedback to prescribing physicians was an effective method in improving antimicrobial use.
Trial Registration.ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT00552838.

Background.
Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus organisms (VRE) have emerged as common nosocomial pathogens, but few population-based data are available on the impact of invasive VRE infections.
Methods. We assessed the incidence of invasive VRE infections and predictors of mortality among patients identified during prospective, population-based surveillance performed in the metropolitan statistical area (MSA) of Atlanta, Georgia.
Results. From July 1997 through June 2000, a total of 192 patients who resided in the Atlanta MSA developed an invasive VRE infection, for a rate of 1.57 cases per 100,000 person-years. The incidence of invasive VRE disease significantly increased from 0.91 cases per 100,000 person-years during the first year of the study to 1.73 cases per 100,000 person-years during the third year of the study (P<.001). Rates of invasive VRE infection were significantly higher among African American patients than white patients (2.59 vs 0.70 cases per 100,000 person-years; P < .001). Blood was the most common sterile site from which VRE was recovered (161 [83%] of 193 isolates), followed by deep surgical sites (17 [9%]), peritoneal fluid (10 [5%]), pleural fluid (3 [2%]), and cerebrospinal fluid (1 [0.5%]). In multivariate analysis, a Charlson comorbidity index of 5 or greater, previous receipt of antibiotic therapy, having 2 or more sets of blood cultures positive for VRE, and receipt of central parenteral nutrition were independent predictors of mortality, whereas receipt of an antibiotic with in vitro activity against the VRE isolate was associated with a decreased risk of mortality. Molecular typing revealed 38 different pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns, but the 2 most common pulsed-field gel electrophoresis types were found at 3 Emory University-affiliated hospitals.
Conclusions. The incidence of invasive VRE infection significantly increased in the Atlanta MSA during the 3-year study period, with significant racial disparities detected. Receipt of an antimicrobial agent with in vitro activity against VRE was associated with a lower mortality rate. Molecular typing results demonstrated polyclonal emergence of VRE in Atlanta.

Polymer/TiO2 composite solar cells (CSCs) are currently being investigated by academic research groups and industrial companies due to the prospect of achieving good power conversion efficiencies and lifetime stability at a low production cost. We present data of the initial period of operation (up to several hours) of such devices, which show that during this period the CSCs operate in a non-steady state regime. The transient behaviour is accounted for using an equivalent circuit model (ECM) of the photovoltaic device with time-dependent resistors.

We report here on the time evolution of photoconductivity under continuous illumination in nanocrystalline TiO2 samples prepared by a sol gel method, and also on the conductivity decay once the illumination is switched off. We observe strong dependence of the photoconductivity on the illumination intensity for both processes. It is found that the conductivity decay after high-intensity illumination is slower than after low-intensity illumination, and we have attempted to explain these experimental results using a model involving hole trapping-detrapping processes.

The electrical and microstructural properties of Au/Ti and Au/Pd/Ti contacts to p+-GaAs (C-doped, 5×1018cm−3) were investigated. Current-voltage measurements as a function of temperature showed that the Ohmicity of the Au/Ti contact improved upon annealing. However, the annealed binary contact featured Au spiking into the GaAs making it unsuitable for HBT applications. The addition of a Pd diffusion barrier layer between the Au and Ti metallisation layers prevented spiking, but resulted in a decrease in the Ohmicity of the contact.
For all the contact systems it was found that thermionic-field emission dominates the current transport mechanism across the metal-semiconductor interface between the temperature range 198K and 348K. The Au/Pd/Ti contact structure shows HBT potential, however higher epilayer doping levels will be required to produce satisfactory specific contact resistivities.

Au/Pd/Ti and Au/Ti/Pd ohmic structures to thin p+-GaAs layers have been investigated for use as contacts to the base region of HJBTs. The Au/Pd/Ti contact system yielded specific contact resistivities at or above 2.8 × 10−5Ω:cm2. Heat treatments up to 8 minutes at 380°C caused only limited interaction between the metallization and the semiconductor. The metal penetrated to a maximum depth of ≃2nm. Specific contact resistivity values less than 10−5Ωcm2 were achieved using the Au/Ti/Pd (400/75/75nm) scheme. The nonalloyed Au/Ti/Pd contact showed the best combination of electrical and structural properties with a contact resistivity value of 9 × 10≃6Ωcm2 and Pd penetration of the GaAs epilayer to a depth of cs30nm.
