Africa is experiencing a rapid increase in adult obesity and associated cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs). The H3Africa AWI-Gen Collaborative Centre was established to examine genomic and environmental factors that influence body composition, body fat distribution and CMD risk, with the aim to provide insights towards effective treatment and intervention strategies. It provides a research platform of over 10 500 participants, 40–60 years old, from Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa. Following a process that involved community engagement, training of project staff and participant informed consent, participants were administered detailed questionnaires, anthropometric measurements were taken and biospecimens collected. This generated a wealth of demographic, health history, environmental, behavioural and biomarker data. The H3Africa SNP array will be used for genome-wide association studies. AWI-Gen is building capacity to perform large epidemiological, genomic and epigenomic studies across several African counties and strives to become a valuable resource for research collaborations in Africa.

Manganese-doped cadmium sulfide nanoparticles are synthesized in a flexible polymer matrix (synthetic rubber) by a chemical route. They are bombarded with 80-MeV oxygen ions having electronic energy loss (Se) dominant over nuclear energy loss (Sn) and with fluence variation 1011–1013 ions/cm2. Piling up of nanoparticles along certain direction was observed in atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of irradiated samples. Such elongated nanostructures are as a result of nanoparticle growth during ion passage through the samples. Specifically, elongated structures in the form of nanoneedles, nanochannels and nanorods have been observed. The fluence dependent photoluminescence spectra (PL) show significant luminescent peaks at 445 nm and 706 nm, respectively which are tunable with ion fluence. Such a tunability could be promising as lasing materials in nano-luminescent devices and laser diodes. Further, detection of efficient third harmonic generation (THG) in these samples (by using irradiation of a Cr:fosterite laser) could be promising in nanoscopy and nonlinear optics.

This is a narrative of events and panics in India in 1907: the fiftieth anniversary of 1857. After the East India Company's political ascendancy in 1757, the uprisings and insurrections of 1857 shook the very foundations of British rule in India. In the summer of 1907, several different strands of protest came together: the nearly all-India telegraph strike was barely over when a revolutionary terrorist network was unearthed, bringing the simmering political cauldron to the boil. The burgeoning swadeshi and boycott movement splintered, partly through the experience of Government repression, into political extremism within the Indian National Congress and revolutionary terrorism via secret societies. The growing radicalism within nationalist politics culminated in the split of the Congress at the meeting at Surat in 1907. Through this process the Indian National Congress changed from its constitutional and elite politics of reform into a more popular and mass-oriented organization. Though much has been written about this period of Indian politics, this paper delineates the larger international technological and informational entanglement through a case study of India, and in particular, Bengal.

Changes in the activities of general esterase, L-alanine:2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase (GPT), L-aspartate:2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase (GOT), acid and alkaline phosphatase after allatectomy, brain-cauterization and juvenoid treatment have been studied. It has been shown that allatectomy reduces the GPT, GOT, general esterase and acid phosphatase activity in all tissues from both sexes and alkaline phosphatase activity in all the cases excepting the testis. Treatment with juvenoid in allatectomized insects reverses the effects of allatectomy. Both allatectomy and brain-cauterization cause the drastic decrease of all the enzymes in both sexes. The physiological significance of these findings has been discussed in this paper.
