Severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) strand-specific assay can be used to identify active SARS-CoV-2 viral replication. We describe the characteristics of 337 hospitalized patients with at least 1 minus-strand SARS-CoV-2 assay performed >20 days after illness onset. This test is a novel tool to identify high-risk hospitalized patients with prolonged SARS-CoV-2 replication.

College athletes across north America are often known on their respective college campuses for their athleticism, and spend a considerable amount of hours weekly engaging in their respective sport through practices, meetings, travelling and meals, to name a few. It is no wonder it is difficult for these students to feel fully engaged and connected on university campuses as students. Female college athletes in particular, who often are not athletes in revenue-generating sports, often feel left behind as students and isolated as athletes. The purpose of the current study was to examine female collegiate athletes’ experience with belonging in a university setting. This qualitative inquiry utilised consensual qualitative research to explore 14 female student athletes’ experience of belonging on a university campus. The results of the data analysis yielded the following domains or themes: athletic team culture, athletic department culture, campus support and involvement, female athlete identity, and individual athlete experience. The most salient finding was that these female athletes suggested that their sense of belonging on campus was almost exclusively related to their experience as an athlete and their athletic team.

Some helicopter manufacturers are exploring the compound helicopter design as it could potentially satisfy the new emerging requirements placed on the next generation of rotorcraft. It is well understood that the main benefit of the compound helicopter is its ability to reach speeds that significantly surpass the conventional helicopter. However, it is possible that the introduction of compounding may lead to a vehicle with significantly different flight characteristics when compared to a conventional helicopter. One method to examine the flight dynamics of an aircraft is to create a linearised mathematical model of the aircraft and to investigate the stability derivatives of the vehicle. The aim of this paper is to examine the stability derivatives of a compound helicopter through a comparison with a conventional helicopter. By taking this approach, some stability, handling qualities and design issues associated with the compound helicopter can be identified. The paper features a conventional helicopter and a compound helicopter. The conventional helicopter is a standard design, featuring a main rotor and a tail-rotor. The compound helicopter configuration features both lift and thrust compounding. The wing offloads the main rotor at high speeds, whereas two propellers provide additional propulsive thrust as well as yaw control. The results highlight that the bare airframe compound helicopter would require a larger tailplane surface to ensure acceptable longitudinal handling qualities in forward flight. In addition, without increasing the size of the bare airframe compound helicopter’s vertical fin, the Dutch roll mode satisfies the ADS-33 level 1 handling qualities category for the majority of the flight envelope.

School belonging, at both a school and university level, has been well documented as a predictor of academic and psychosocial success. The construct has been examined by scholars in a variety of different professional disciplines (e.g., education, psychology, sociology) and continues to be consistently researched. Although significant contributions have been made in the field, there are still additional areas of investigation needed, as well as interventions that need to be designed and explored. The current article was designed to review the theoretical foundations of belonging, conceptualise school belonging with respect to how it is presented in the literature, discuss the key variables related to school belonging, present a summary of the predictors of school belonging, discuss school belonging in a university setting, and posit future directions for research.

We have used high-resolution, HST WFC3/IR, near-infrared imaging to conduct a detailed bulge-disk decomposition of the morphologies of ≃ 200 of the most massive (M* > 1011 M⊙) galaxies at 1 < z < 3 in the CANDELS-UDS field. We find that, while such massive galaxies at low redshift are generally bulge-dominated, at redshifts 1<z<2 they are predominantly mixed bulge+disk systems, and by z > 2 they are mostly disk-dominated. Interestingly, we find that while most of the quiescent galaxies are bulge-dominated, a significant fraction (25–40%) of the most quiescent galaxies, have disk-dominated morphologies. Thus, our results suggest that the physical mechanisms which quench star-formation activity are not simply connected to those responsible for the morphological transformation of massive galaxies.

An outbreak of meningococcal disease in Stonehouse: planning and execution of a large-scale survey

In November 1986 a large-scale survey was undertaken in the Gloucestershire town of Stonehouse during an outbreak of meningococcal disease due to group B type 15 subtype Pl. 16 sulphonamide-resistant strains. There were 15 cases in Stonehouse residents during the 4 years from April 1983, an annual attack rate of 56·5 per 100000. Four secondary cases occurred despite rifampicin prophylaxis. The objectives of this community survey were to investigate patterns of meningococcal carriage, transmission and immunity and to determine the proportion of non-secretors of blood group antigens in the Stonehouse population find amongst meningococcal carriers. A total of 6237 subjects participated including 75% of the 6635 Stonehouse residents. Over 97% of the participants provided all three of the requested specimens – nasopharyngeal swabs, saliva and blood samples.
The co-operation between the many organizations involved in the detailed preliminary planning was instrumental in the success of the survey; in particular the value of effective collaboration between Departments of Community Medicine and Microbiology and of the Public Health Laboratory Service network of laboratories in undertaking investigations of this size and type was clearly demonstrated.

Piglets in litters, paired according to farrowing date, were redistributed during the first day after birth according to two schemes. In scheme AC–BD, one sow of the pair received the heaviest and the third heaviest quarters of the combined litters (based on weight post partum), while the other sow received the second heaviest and the lightest quarters. In scheme AB–CD, one sow received the heavier half, and the other the lighter half of the piglets. After 3 weeks under scheme AB–CD, the weight difference between the second and third quarters had become reversed, while under scheme AC–BD the difference was preserved. There was no evidence of a corresponding interaction in the selection of anterior or posterior teats. The rank correlation of the piglets' initial weight and suckling position was low for most sows. No marked differences were observed between fostered and unfostered piglets in the weight measures or suckling position. It is concluded that the growth of the piglets was influenced by the relative size of their litter-mates after redistribution, but that little of the effect could be explained by competition for the anterior teats.

Objective:
To present the first published case of a child with bilateral profound sudden sensorineural hearing loss found in association with sickle cell anaemia, and to demonstrate the importance of early recognition, investigation and empirical treatment of sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
Method:Case report and review of world literature.
Case report:The authors present the case of a seven-year-old child with known sickle cell anaemia, who presented with bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss developing over a period of five days. There was a history of ophthalmological disease in the preceding weeks, and inflammatory markers were raised. The differential diagnosis included a vaso-occlusive or inflammatory aetiology such as Cogan's syndrome, and treatment for both was instigated. Hearing thresholds did not recover, and the patient underwent cochlear implantation 12 weeks later.
Conclusion:Sudden sensorineural hearing loss has a variable aetiology and is rare in children. Immediate treatment for all possible aetiologies is essential, along with targeted investigations and early referral for cochlear implantation if no recovery is demonstrated.

Escherichia coli O157 outbreaks were identified in Minnesota in February 2003 involving seven persons and in Colorado in July 2003 involving 13 persons. Case isolates from the two states had matching pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns. Independent case-control studies linked infections in each outbreak with eating alfalfa sprouts that were traced to the same seed distributor. The Colorado sprouter reportedly complied with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sprout guidance, whereas the Minnesota sprouter did not. These investigations revealed that increased compliance with existing FDA guidance is needed and that additional research is needed to improve the alfalfa seed decontamination process. This reaffirms the FDA recommendation that raw alfalfa sprouts should be considered potentially contaminated and avoided by persons at high-risk such as the elderly, young children, and immunocompromised persons. PFGE played an essential role in linking these two temporally and geographically distinct E. coli O157 outbreaks.

The development of a new species, Bacillidium vesiculoformis n. sp. (Microspora, Mrazekiidae), is described from the freshwater oligochaete Nais simplex (Oligochaeta, Naididae). Initial stages of parasite development consist of a monokaryotic merogony within a haemocyte of the intestinal blood sinus. The resulting hypertrophied haemocyte is attached to the chloragocytes of the sinus by fine cytoplasmic extensions with the sinus around the cell becoming greatly enlarged. The meronts within the haemocyte form diplokaryotic sporonts that undergo sporogenesis directly within the cytoplasm of the host cell. The infected cell becomes packed with spores and developmental stages, causing it dramatically to increase in size, eventually rupturing the oligochaete and cell. Sporogony appears to be disporoblastic. Released spores were observed to have an adhesive quality. Transmission studies conducted with mature spores failed to transmit the parasite horizontally although vertical transmission was observed. Phylogenetic analysis of the parasite demonstrated that B. vesiculoformis clustered with microsporidian parasites of bryozoa and two other microsporidians, Janacekia debaiseuxi and an unidentified Bacillidium sp.

Human serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL) is necessary and sufficient for the short-term maintenance of Plasmodium falciparum in in vitro culture. However, at high concentrations it is toxic to the parasite. A heat-labile component is apparently responsible for the stage-specific toxicity to parasites within infected erythrocytes 12–42 h after invasion, i.e. during trophozoite maturation. The effects of HDL on parasite metabolism (as determined by nucleic acid synthesis) are evident at about 30 h after invasion. Parasites treated with HDL show gross abnormalities by light and electron microscopy.

As the group III nitride semiconductor technology matures, an increasing number of devices are being fabricated with high Al fraction AlGaN. In this study, ohmic behavior is achieved using Ti/Al/Pt/Au contacts to n-Al0.4Ga0.6N, which is the highest Al fraction for which ohmic contact formation has been reported. The effect of contact composition, pretreatment, and annealing conditions is studied by 30 s isochronal annealing experiments between 500°C and 1000°C. A specific contact resistance ρC of (5±3) × 10−5 ωcm2 is obtained using Ti(26 nm)/Al(74 nm)/Pt(50 nm)/Au(50 nm) contacts to n-Al0.4Ga0.6N annealed in N2 at 800°C; however, this value is shown to be artificially high because the metal sheet resistance RM is 4 ω/⊏ causing an artifact in the data analysis. All contacts with ρC < 10−3 ωcm2 exhibit a local minimum in ρC after annealing at 800°C. The observed increase in ρC upon annealing at 850°C and 900°C, however, is not an artifact originating from a change in RM. The top Au layer is found to play an active role in forming ohmic contacts with low ρC, since omitting the Au layer yields an increase in ρC of two orders of magnitude after annealing at 800°C. Furthermore, leaving out the Au layer requires an annealing temperature of 700°C to result in linear I-V curves for currents up to 100 µA, as opposed to 500°C when the Au layer is present. The role of Au is further studied in Ti(26 nm)/Al(74 nm)/Ni(50 nm)/Au(50 nm) contacts, where Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy reveals Ga in the metal layer and/or Au buried deeper than the original semiconductor-metal interface, and x-ray diffraction indicates the formation of new phases to happen concurrently with a decrease in ρC of three orders of magnitude.

Real-time Monitoring of semiconductor growth by Spectroscopic ellipsometry

in situ Spectroscopic Ellipsometry (SE) is an optical technique which is well suited for the monitoring of epitaxial semiconductor growth, due to its high surface sensitivity and non-invasive nature. In this work, SE systems were installed on both MBE and MOCVD deposition systems to monitor the epitaxial growth of InxGa1−xAs and InxAl1−xAs compounds on InP substrates. The structures grown include thick lattice matched In0.53Ga0.47As buffer layers (for HBT collectors), and strained RTD structures. SE was used to monitor in real-time layer composition and thickness during growth. To enhance the precision and accuracy of the SE determined growth parameters, it was necessary to optimize the SE data analysis strategies. A methodology to determine the best spectral region for the SE data analysis in the presence of noise and systematic effects (such as angle of incidence uncertainty, detector wavelength shifts, surface roughness, uncertainty in surface temperature, non-ideal growth modes, etc.) is presented. Using the optimized data analysis strategies, long term SE-determined InxGa1−�As composition accuracy (as verified by ex situ x-ray measurements) of ±0.002 in ‘x’ was achieved. SE thickness measurements of ultra-thin (<30Å) strained AlAs barrier layers were also in excellent agreement (±0.5Å) with real-time photo-emission oscillation measurements.
