Scientific research has always been concerned with aspects of human health. There are several systems of medicines besides the globally accepted allopathy, which are based on compounds originating from natural products. Recent research has been centred around validation of the traditional knowledge on medicinal products. The traditional systems in India, China and forklore medicines in other parts of the world have indicated the potential of natural products consist of various chemical compounds that could be used as drugs. The search for drugs against five major dreadful diseases namely, cancer, AIDS, heart disease, diabetes and pulmonary disorders that attack the present day human from natural products has been in progress for some time. Microbes, plants and animals are the sources of natural products. In the past five decades, the research on bioactive chemicals from marine algae has been incited and several compounds with biological activity were isolated from algae. Generally, these are secondary metabolites produced for chemical defence against the biotic pressure of predators, consumers and epibionts. These potential drugs are now attracting considerable attention from the pharmaceutical industries due to the necessity of identifying substances that could be utilized for novel therapeutic purposes. Several compounds such as alginate, carrageenans, sulphated and halogenated polysachcharise and other derivatives have been shown to provide drugs that could be antiviral, anticancer and antimicrobial. The present account is on the potential of marine macro-algae for medicinally important products.

Characterization of a newly synthesized organic nonlinear optical crystal: benzoyl valine

Herein the synthesis and the crystal growth of benzoyl valine (BV), an organic nonlinear optical (NLO) material for frequency conversion was grown by slow evaporation solution growth technique at room temperature has been reported. The compound was prepared by Stockman method of benzoylation. The solubility curve shows linear nature up to a temperature of 313 K. XRD study reveals that the crystal belongs to monoclinic system with P21 non-centrosymmetric space group. The fundamental vibrational frequency of various functional groups (400-4000 cm-1) in the crystal was determined from FTIR analysis. 1H and 13C NMR spectral studies reveal the presence of proton and carbon network in the grown crystalline sample. The optical behaviour of the crystal was ascertained by optical UV absorption spectral studies. The UV cut off region (λmax) lies around 200 nm and the crystal is absolutely transparent from 220–800 nm suggesting its application as NLO material. The thermal stability of the crystal was determined by thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses. Laser damage threshold of BV was found to be 0.34 GW/cm2 and hence BV can be used in frequency doubler system. Photoconductivity study of BV revealed negative photoconductiviting nature of the sample. The microhardness studies confirm that BV has a moderate Vickers hardness number (VHN) value in comparison to the other organic NLO crystals.

Epitaxial AlGaN/GaN layers grown by MBE on SiC substrates were irradiated with 150 MeV Ag ions at a fluence of 5×1012 ions/cm2. AlGaN/GaN MQWs were grown on Sapphire substrate by MOCVD and irradiated with 200 MeV Au8+ ions at a fluence of 5×1011 ions/cm2 . These samples were used to study the effects of SHI on optical properties of AlGaN/GaN based nano structures. RBS/Channelling strain measurements were carried out at off normal axis of irradiated and unirradiated samples. In as grown samples, AlGaN layer is partially relaxed with a small compressive strain. After irradiation this compressive strain increases by 0.22% in AlGaN layer. Incident ion energy dependence of dechannelling parameter shows E1/2 dependence, which corresponds to the dislocations. Defect densities were calculated from the E1/2 graph. As a result of irradiation defect density increased on both GaN and AlGaN layer. Optical properties of AlGaN/GaN MQWs before and after irradiation have been analyzed using PL. This study shows that SHI increase the confinement effects in the MQWs and intensity of the active layer of the MQWs luminescence is increased by one order. This may be due to the induced strain in GaN and AlGaN layers. Some unwanted yellow luminescence has also been introduced by the SHI possibly due the point defects or defect luminescence from the induced dislocations in GaN bulk epitaxial layers. In this study, we present some new results concerning high energy irradiation on AlGaN/GaN heterostructures and MQWs characterized by RBS/Channelling and PL.

Field experiments during the winter seasons of 1986–7 and 1987–8 studied the effect of three sub-surface drain spacings and three levels of phosphorus on the yield, chemical composition and uptake of nutrients by Indian mustard (Brassica juncea). The number of siliquae m-2 and seed yield decreased with increasing drain spacing. Application of phosphorus increased seed yield and yield attributes. The concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in the seed and stalks decreased and those of sodium, calcium and magnesium increased with increasing drain spacing, but application of phosphorus increased the concentration of these nutrients in the seed and stalks. Absence of phosphorus in the drain water effluent and the level of available phosphorus in the soil profile after crop harvest indicated very slow movement of phosphorus, most of which was retained in the top 30 cm of soil.

Summary
Introduction
Dryland ecosystems, where most of the world's poor live, are characterised by extreme rainfall variability, recurrent but unpredictable droughts, high temperatures and low soil fertility. The underdevelopment in the dryland1 region of Asia reflects the pervasiveness of poverty, as demonstrated by continuing concerns about malnutrition, migration due to frequent droughts, growing constraints of the natural resource base (water scarcity and land degradation), lack of infrastructure, poor dissemination of improved technologies and effects of government policies, and further economic liberalisation (GT-SAT Futures 2002). Dryland areas indeed present significant constraints to intensive agriculture.
The Green Revolution of the 1960s and 1970s — with its package of improved seeds and chemical fertilisers, and enhanced farm technology and irrigation — successfully attained its primary objective of increasing crop yields and augmenting aggregate food supplies. In Asia, where the package was most widely adopted, food production increased substantially during those decades. Despite its success in increasing aggregate food supply, the Green Revolution as a development approach has not necessarily translated into benefits for the lower strata of the rural poor in terms of greater food security or greater economic opportunity and well-being. Moreover, vast expanses of dryland regions were bypassed by the Green Revolution. They had failed to attract commercial investments in agricultural technology due to small or non-existent markets.
Development planners and policymakers are now increasingly eyeing the hitherto less-favoured dryland regions, where agricultural transformation is yet to take off. Due to issues of equity, efficiency and sustainability, the need to improve the productivity of dryland agriculture has become more compelling, given that the growth opportunities in irrigated areas are being exhausted.
This paper summarises the major challenges in achieving food security, income growth, poverty reduction and environmental sustainability for the dryland regions of Asia. It also identifies future strategies and priorities as it highlights emerging issues that threaten the sustainability of dryland agriculture and future sources of growth.
The next section presents an overview of the dynamics of dryland agriculture. It is followed by an analysis of the persistent challenges facing it, and identifies opportunities such as agricultural diversification, trade liberalisation, the commercial orientation of agriculture, and institutional innovations. Finally, implications for policy, research priorities and development pathways are drawn, followed by a vision for Asian dryland agriculture.

The Lyot Project near-infrared JHK coronagraph achieved first light on the Advanced Electro-Optical System (AEOS) in March 2004. Optical pupil plane imaging at video rates from this coronagraph provides data on atmospheric scintillation and quasi-static pupil intensity variations. We examine the effect of these variations on coronagraphic performance. Early simulations suggested Strehl ratio reductions of the order of 2–3% due to residual uncorrected phase aberrations in H-band. We find that static or quasi-static pupil illumination non-uniformity in I-band reduces Strehl by $\sim$2%. A lower bound on the effects of dynamic illumination variation over the pupil is also $\sim$2% in I-band. Some of the static intensity variations in the pupil are due to pinned deformable mirror (DM) actuators. We simulate the effects a pinned actuator has on the coronagraph. The resultant speckles in simulated coronagraphic images show similarities to some Lyot Project PSFs. This highlights the importance of knowledge of the pupil in next-generation extreme AO coronagraphs in order to realize the predicted photometric dynamic range of their images.

Mussel adhesive protein analogs are biologically-derived materials that possess unique adhesion properties. We have demonstrated thin film growth of DOPA modified- PEG block copolymer mussel adhesive protein analogs using a novel laser processing technique known as matrix assisted pulsed laser evaporation (MAPLE). The main functional groups of the mussel adhesive protein analog are present in the MAPLE-transferred film. These novel polymer thin films have numerous medical, electronic, and marine applications.

We present a novel process methodology for the controlled cutting of nanotubes and other nanostructures to well-controlled lengths and sizes. The continuing increase in complexity of electronic devices, coupled with decreasing size of individual elements, are placing more stringent demands on the resolution and accuracy of fabrication patterns. The ability to fabricate on a nanometer scale guarantees a continuation in miniaturization of functional devices. Particularly interesting is the application of nanotubes' chemical and electronic properties which vary with their dimensions and structure. One realization of this process includes the use of photolithography or electron beam lithography to place protective resist patterns over the nanostructures to be cut. Those sections which are not covered by the resist pattern are removed by reactive ion etching. This is a scaleable process which permits the simultaneous cutting of many nanostructures and ensembles of nanostructures. The lengths, shapes or length distributions can be predicted from theory and thus specified for a given application requirement. Nanostructures which can be cut in this process include nanotubes, nanofibers and nanoplanes. Large scale production of nanostructures with uniform length or specific size-distribution can be used in electronic applications such as field-emission transistors, optoelectronic elements, single electron devices and sensors.

An extension of the method devised by Monaghan and Roxburgh (1965) for rapidly rotating polytropes is used to study the structure of the primary component of a synchronous close binary system. Results are presented for polytropes of index 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 4.9. We conclude that the extended Monaghan and Roxburgh method can be applied to real stars which are perturbed by both tidal and rotational forces.

Dicke and Goldenberg (1967a) measured the solar oblateness to be σ= (5±0.7) × 10-5 and subsequently interpreted this measurement as evidence that the solar interior rotates with a period of 1.d8. With this interpretation, they then showed that the observed oblateness causes an 8% discrepancy in the Einstein prediction of the perihelion advance of Mercury. The stability analysis of Goldreich and Schubert (1967) seems to preclude such a fast rotation of the solar interior although magnetic field effects could alter their conclusions (Dicke, 1967). More recently Goldreich and Schubert (1968) and Fricke (1969) have calculated upper bounds to the solar oblateness essentially by finding the steepest distribution of angular velocity that is consistent with secular stability at each point in the equatorial plane of the sun. Fricke’s result of σmax=1.4 × 10-5 is based on a stronger stability criterion than that of Goldreich and Schubert who found σmax=1.4 × 10-4; Fricke, however, suggests that this may be in error and should actually be σmax=3.4 × 10-5. In their calculations of σmax the above authors assumed that the outer convective layers of the sun are rotating uniformly and that the angular velocity in the interior is a function of the radial distance from the center of the sun only. We note that while these assumptions are reasonable, neither of them is supported by the observed solar rotation.
