A Simple In-Season Bioassay for Detecting Glyphosate Resistance in Grass and Broadleaf Weeds Prior to Herbicide Application in the Field

The implementation of a successful glyphosate resistance management strategy requires a simple and cost-effective method for detecting resistance in key weeds. To date, however, glyphosate resistance is still routinely confirmed via laborious and time consuming whole-plant pot assays using seeds collected at the end of the growing season. Here, we describe a simple, early-season bioassay for detecting evolved glyphosate resistance in grass and broadleaf weeds. It involves transplanting suspected glyphosate resistant seedlings alongside known sensitive and resistant standards into agar containing informative rates of herbicide and recording percentage survival 14 d after plating. The method was validated using sensitive and resistant populations of Lolium, Eleusine, Conyza, and Amaranthus species encompassing the main glyphosate resistance mechanisms, namely, impaired translocation, EPSPS gene duplication, and mutations. The whole plant pot and agar-based seedling tests generated comparable resistance indices in dose-response assays and percentage survival at discriminating glyphosate rates. The method was applied successfully to detect resistance in a rigid ryegrass population collected from a French vineyard well before glyphosate was applied in the field for the current season. Additionally, the test was shown to be highly transferable to several other grass and broadleaf weeds that have evolved resistance to glyphosate. One major attribute of the method is that it is capable of detecting resistance regardless of the mechanism involved. In addition to being very simple, quick and, cost-effective, it allows determination of glyphosate resistance in weeds prior to field application. It thus offers the opportunity for an informed choice of herbicides for effective weed control.

Distribution of depth to ice-cemented soils in the high-elevation Quartermain Mountains, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica

We report on 475 measurements of depth to ice-cemented ground in four high-elevation valleys of the Quartermain Mountains, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. These valleys have pervasive ice-cemented ground, and the depth to ice-cemented ground and the ice composition may be indicators of climate change. In University Valley, the measured depth to ice-cemented ground ranges from 0–98 cm. There is an overall trend of increasing depth to ice-cemented ground with distance from a small glacier at the head of the valley, with a slope of 32 cm depth per kilometre along the valley floor. For Farnell Valley, the depth to ice-cemented ground is roughly constant (c. 30 cm) in the upper and central parts of the valley, but increases sharply as the valley descends into Beacon Valley. The two valleys north of University Valley also have extensive ice-cemented ground, with depths of 20–40 cm, but exhibit no clear patterns of ice depth with location. For all valleys there is a tendency for the variability in depth to ice-cemented ground at a site to increase with increasing depth to ice. Snow recurrence, solar insolation, and surface albedo may all be factors that cause site to site variations in these valleys.

Metanopedias sicarius Brues, 1910 is considered a new synonym of Trichacis brunneipes Ashmead, 1887. The genus Metanopedias Brues is redefined and Metanopedias brunneipes (Ashmead) new combination is proposed. The latter species is redescribed and illustrated, its geographical distribution and host relationships are listed and discussed.

INTRODUCTION
Safari hunting, sometimes called tourist hunting, is a form of land use that is capable of generating exceedingly high market value for wildlife resources. Well-established trade practices exist worldwide for marketing hunts to maximize the economic value of wildlife, and to satisfy tourist demand for hunting adventures and trophy quality animals. Revenues from these sales account for over US$500 million annually worldwide, and in South Africa alone, annual revenues exceed US$50 million (Van der Walt 2002). The direct revenue to the government of Tanzania from safari hunting exceeds US$10 million annually (E. Severre pers. com.).
On private land, tourist hunting has become a major factor for wildlife recovery and reintroduction in many parts of the world. Examples of these successes are in the tens of thousands and have unequivocally proven to be an important economic engine for conservation. In South Africa, for example, over 9000 private game ranches occupy 10 364 km2 (Bothma 2002), and have contributed to the recovery of blesbok (Damaliscus albifrons), white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum), black wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou) and the Cape mountain zebra (Equus zebra zebra) (Flack 2002). Today, South Africa has more wildlife than it has had in the past 100 years (Bothma 2002). It is estimated that game ranches in South Africa contain 1.7 million large mammals on 13.3% of the land formerly designated for agriculture, but subsequently converted to private game ranches (Eloff 2002).
