Deciding whether or not eradication of an invasive species has been successful is one of the main dilemmas facing managers of eradication programmes. When the species is no longer being detected, a decision must be made about when to stop the eradication programme and declare success. In practice, this decision is usually based on ad hoc rules, which may be inefficient. Since surveillance undertaken to confirm species absence is imperfect, any declaration of eradication success must consider the risk and the consequences of being wrong. If surveillance is insufficient, then eradication may be falsely declared (a Type I error), whereas continuation of surveillance when eradication has already occurred wastes resources (a Type II error). We review the various methods that have been developed for quantifying these errors and incorporating them into the decision-making process. We conclude with an overview of future developments likely to improve the practice of determining invasive species eradication success.

An apparatus has been developed which allows the complete replacement of interstitial water in sediments without disturbance. In principle, it can be adapted to handle sand or mud, different solutions, and different volumes of sediment. The apparatus was tested with 0·05% (wt/vol.) eosin in sea water. After replacement of the interstitial water, the eosin was evenly distributed throughout the sediment. Interstitial water in samples of sediment was replaced by sulphide solutions in sea water, at a range of concentrations. The responses of Corophium volutator to these sediments was tested in choice and non-choice experiments. In the choice experiments, animals avoided burrowing in sediments containing sulphide at concentrations greater than about 5·8 × 10−5M. In the non-choice experiments, animals were progressively inhibited from burrowing when the sediment sulphide concentration was greater than about 5·8 × 10−4M. No mortality occurred during the experiments.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
The relationship between primate social group size and ecological factors has been a focal point of numerous theoretical and empirical research efforts (van Schaik & van Hooff 1983; Terborgh & Janson 1986; Chapman et al. 1995; Janson & Goldsmith 1995; Chapman & Chapman 2000). An increase in group size may confer benefits of increased protection from predation or infanticide, and/or increased effectiveness in intergroup competition (Wrangham 1980; van Schaik & van Hooff 1983; Sterck et al. 1997; Boesch & Boesch-Achermann 2000). Furthermore, individuals may prefer to associate with others to build coalitions (Boesch & Boesch-Achermann 2000), or to facilitate the socialization of offspring (Williams et al., Chapter 14).14). However, the benefits of sociality come at the cost of an increase in intragroup foraging competition and an increase in traveling between food patches (Chapman et al. 1995; Janson & Goldsmith 1995). Consequently, the ecological constraints model predicts that the size of primate social groups should have an upper limit that is determined by the abundance and distribution of food (Chapman & Chapman 2000).
Chimpanzees and other primates that live in fission–fusion social organizations have been the focus of efforts to understand better how group size is constrained by ecological factors. In these societies, individuals form parties that change in size and composition many times a day (Goodall 1986; Boesch 1996). Substantial empirical evidence suggests that party sizes are correlated with patch size (Symington 1988; Strier 1989; de Moraes & de Carvalho 1998; Newton-Fisher et al. 2000), and that seasonal variations in party sizes are related to seasonal fluctuations in the habitat-wide abundance and distribution of food (Chapman et al. 1995).
