Urbanization and the increasing concentration of population in the major urban centers in Latin America is often conceived as the manifestation of a convergent economic process, that of industrialization (Roberts 1978). Internal cityward migration and natural increase are two dominant contributors to the increase in urbanized population throughout most of Latin America and the Caribbean in the last four decades (Elizaga 1965, Clarke 1974, Davis 1972). In Latin American research, studies of internal migration and urbanization have proliferated, investigating regional origins, migration networks, migrant selectivity, aspects of migrant assimilation in the urban social, economic and political realms, and the character and nature of initial settlement (cf. Morse 1971 for a summary of studies written between 1965–70). By and large, previous research has not fully explored the social and spatial dimensions of the process whereby migrants select initial residential sites and subsequently relocate (exceptions include studies by Brown 1972, Cornelius 1975, Davies and Blood 1974, Vaughn and Feindt 1973, Ward 1976). In short, we know very little about the paths a migrant follows between the time he reaches the city and the time he settles into a secure and stable dwelling environment.

Summary
Introduction
In this chapter we widen the scope of research enquiry into Caribbean return migration in later life and empirically examine the case of Caribbean pre-retirement and retirement return migration so that the behavioural dynamics of retirement return migration are explained more completely, if contingently. The migrant's flexibility of options is given more credence, family ties and obligations are shown to definitely ‘matter’ and transnational experiences and practices are additional influential determining factors for retirement-related return migration. In short, we seek to expand our understanding of the patterns and processes of lifecourse planning that underline retirement return migration in the contemporary Caribbean. In so doing, our account offers conceptual explanations that are more complex and flexible in terms of timing, motives and mobilities. First, however, the contextual background is forwarded, before proceeding with the identification (and examination) of the behavioural dynamics of Caribbean return migration in later life.
For the post-1948 ‘Windrush generation’ of British West Indian emigrants (Peach, 1968; Lowenthal, 1972), return migration in later life has commonly been believed to be directly related to the timing of retirement in the overseas destination to which these now-elderly retirees initially emigrated; most frequently, the UK or North America – the US and Canada (Gmelch, 1992; Byron, 1999; Goulebourne, 1999). After all, many emigrated to seek better lives for themselves, their partners and children, while retaining a deeply-felt sense of belonging to the Caribbean homeland they left behind (Philpott, 1973; Fog Olwig, 2005). Also, many retained an intention to return, eventually, with retirement being a significant lifecourse event that prompted thoughts of a permanent return as a culmination of their overseas migration experience.
US-based research on ‘amenity-retirement migration’, versus ‘assistance-migration’ and ‘spouse-absence migration’ (Wiseman and Roseman, 1979; Litwak and Longino, 1987; Walters, 2000; Bradley, 2011), finds there are a variety of causes and reasons for such later-life migration decision making, though these authors were explicitly dealing with internal migration within the US. Older movers in the US are found to be a heterogeneous mix of migrant types with decidedly different lifecourse trajectories, and varying familial/dependent relationships. The needs and motivations underlying this later-life migration of older people, therefore, are conditional on many differing situations and lifecourse transitions, so that the timing of such residential relocations is by no means generalisable and there are no definitive stages in the decision making that can be viewed as logical temporal steps.

Collection of complete and accurate dietary intake data is necessary to investigate the association of nutrient intakes with disease outcomes. A standardised multiple-pass 24 h dietary recall method was used in the International Collaborative Study of Macro- and Micronutrients and Blood Pressure (INTERMAP) to obtain maximally objective data. Dietary interviewers were intensively trained and recalls taped, with consent, for randomly selected evaluations by the local site nutritionist (SN) and/or country nutritionists (CN) using a twelve-criterion checklist marked on a four-point scale (1, retrain, to 4, excellent). In the Belfast centre, seven dietary interviewers collected 932 24 h recalls from 40–59-year-old men and women. Total scores from the 134 evaluated recalls ranged from thirty-four to the maximum forty-eight points. All twelve aspects of the interviews were completed satisfactorily on average whether scored by the SN (n 53, range: probing 3·25 to privacy of interview 3·98) or CN (n 19, range: probing 3·26 to pace of interview and general manner of interviewer 3·95); the CN gave significantly lower scores than the SN for recalls evaluated by both nutritionists (n 31, Wilcoxon signed rank test, P=0·001). Five evaluations of three recalls identified areas requiring retraining or work to improve performance. Reporting accuracy was estimated using BMR; energy intake estimates less than 1·2 × BMR identifying under-reporting. Mean ratios in all age, sex and body-mass groups were above this cut-off point; overall, 26·1 % were below. Experiences from the INTERMAP Belfast centre indicate that difficulties in collection of dietary information can be anticipated and contained by the systematic use of methods to prevent, detect and correct errors.

Coding diet records is a basic element of most dietary surveys, yet it often receives little attention even though errors in coding can lead to flawed study results. In the INTERnational study of MAcro- and micronutrients and blood Pressure (INTERMAP study), efforts were made to minimise errors in coding the 18 720 diet records. Staff were centrally trained and certified before being able to process study data and ongoing quality control checks were performed. This involved the senior (site) nutritionist re-coding randomly selected diet records. To facilitate standardisation of coding in the UK, a code book was designed; it included information about coding brand items, density and portion size information, and default codes to be assigned when limited information was available for food items. It was found that trainees, despite previous experience in coding elsewhere, made coding errors that resulted in errors in estimates of daily energy and nutrient intakes. As training proceeded, the number of errors decreased. Compilation of the code book was labour-intensive, as information from food manufacturers and retailers had to be collected. Strategies are required to avoid repetition of this effort by other research groups. While the methods used in INTERMAP to reduce coding errors were time consuming, the experiences suggest that such errors are important and that they can be reduced.
