Farm milk prices tend to be volatile. Dairy farmers, industry pundits, and policymakers further tend to react to price volatility with alarm. One point of concern is the response of retail prices. This study investigates farm-to-retail price transmission in the 2000s for whole milk and Cheddar cheese. Results show that price shocks at the farm gate are transmitted with delay and asymmetry to retail. Differences in the nature of price transmission for whole milk and Cheddar cheese prices are also identified.

On 27 November 2011, a whale resembling a True's beaked whale, Mesoplodon mirus, was found stranded on the South Island of New Zealand. Sequencing of two mitochondrial regions (cytochrome b and mtDNA control region) confirmed species identification as a True's beaked whale that was genetically identified as female. Further examination of the carcass found that the whale was pregnant although decomposition excluded determination of the age of the foetus. This specimen is confirmed as the first record of the species in New Zealand further supporting New Zealand as a whale stranding hotspot.

It is nearly ten years since Quebec held its referendum on Sovereignty Association and time, perhaps, for a retrospective. There were winners and losers in 1980, but the real winner may have been the idea that sovereignty may be established democratically. Governments, of course, are quick to agree that people have the right to determine their sovereignty democratically—so long as this takes place in the State of Nature invented by Hobbes for just such august occasions. Only thrice to my knowledge, however, have governments actually allowed anything even remotely close to a social contract, once in Norway in 1905, once in Wales in 1979 and again in Quebec in 1980.

Intraoperative facial nerve monitoring has become an integral adjunct in facial nerve identification and preservation for patients undergoing cerebellopontine angle surgery. Since the first description of EMG monitoring of facial nerve activity intraoperatively, many systems have been developed. These systems often rely on unilateral monitoring of the facial nerve with auditory feedback to the surgeon, and it is difficult to distinguish between artifact and significant stimulation of the facial nerve.
In this paper, we present the use of a bilateral, multialarm, facial nerve monitoring system that has multiple advantages over previous systems. Furthermore, we review our experience with this bilateral system, comparing a group of 50 monitored patients to a group of 50 unmonitored patients.
