We show evidence that the competition between the antiferromagnetic metallic phase and the charge- and orbital-ordered insulating phase at the reentrant phase boundary of a layered manganite, LaSr2Mn2O7, can be manipulated using ultrafast optical excitation. The time-dependent evolution of the Jahn-Teller superlattice reflection, the indicator of the formation of charge and orbital order, was measured at different laser fluences. The laser-induced change in the Jahn-Teller reflection intensity shows a reversal of sign between earlier (∼10 ns) and later (∼150 ns) times during the relaxation of the sample. This is consistent with a physics picture whereby the laser excitation modulates the local competition between the metallic and the insulating phases.

Measurements of the engineering constants E, G, and v are routinely made for polymeric materials. If these materials are isotropic, these measurements should satisfy the relationship G = E/2(1 + v). However, many past measurements have indicated that this relationship is not satisfied. This raises questions about the assumptions of material isotropy and the applicability of Hooke's law. The methods used to measure these engineering constants for a number of different polymers are first described. Then, new results obtained in the current investigation are presented, indicating that the elastic constants do in fact satisfy the isotropic relationship for strains up to 0.5%. However, it is shown that at strain levels above this level, the relationship between stress and strain is nonlinear.

Stationary and portable field sampling equipment and techniques are described for the collection of gaseous and aerosol forms of 2,4-D compounds. Air was sampled at the rate of 1 liter per minute through 10 ml of n-decane in a modified midget impinger maintained at approximately 1 C. Field sampling was conducted at two eastern Washington sites for approximately 106 days during the summer of 1963. The presence of isopropyl, butyl, and isooctyl esters of 2,4-D in the atmosphere was established by electron capture gas chromatography. Twenty-four hour average atmospheric concentrations of these esters ranged from undetectable to 3.1 μg/m3.
