Photometric observations on the UBV system have been made of a number of optically identified radio sources. The measurements are basically of two types: (1) offset photometry with the Siding Spring 40-inch reflector of objects identified as probable quasars or N galaxies, and (2) observations with the Siding Spring 24-inch reflector of radio galaxies brighter than V = 14m.0.

We have studied the electrical and optical characteristics GaN/InGaN based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) grown on sapphire using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Strong correlation has been found between material quality and the mechanism of current transport through the wide-bandgap p-n junction. Tunneling behavior dominates throughout all injection regimes in the devices with high-density defects in the space-charge region, which act as deep-level carrier traps. The approximately current-squared dependence of light output at low currents indicates dominant nonradiative recombination in the active region. However, in a high quality LED diode, tunneling current is only a major contributor at low forward biases. At moderate biases, temperature dependent diffusion-recombination current has been identified as I0 exp(qV/1.6kT). In these devices, nonradiative recombination centers are saturated at current densities as low as 1.4×10-2 A/cm2.

The antibody response to a dietary antigen (soya-bean protein) and the development of oral tolerance was studied in pigs in a family pen system where the piglets are left with their mothers and gradually wean themselves onto a soya-bean-based diet over a 12 week period. In the first experiment three groups of pigs (eight pigs/group) aged either 2, 8 or 13 weeks were immunized with soya-bean protein or ovalbumin (OvA; controls) intra-peritoneally (i.p.) in Quill A adjuvant and subsequently boosted 2 weeks later. All groups showed an IgG response to the injected antigens indicating lack of tolerance induction to the dietary antigen. Interestingly the groups injected with OvA showed an almost identical response to soya- bean protein as the groups injected with soya-bean protein. In a second experiment with a similar protocol, soya bean was withdrawn from the feed before immunization which resulted in lack of response to soya-bean protein in the groups injected with OvA and a lack of response to injected soya-bean protein in the 14-week-old group, indicating that systemic tolerance was established by 12 weeks of age. The results from the two experiments suggest a compartmentalized response to soya-bean protein i.e. local antibody production to dietary soya bean along with systemic tolerance to injected soya-bean protein. The work also suggests that delayed‘natural’weaning may avoid damaging hypersensitivity reactions associated with early weaning.

The epitheliochorial placenta of the pig does not allow the passage of immunoglobulin to the foetus and thus the young piglet is born without passive immune protection. During the first 36 h of life there is a massive transmission of macromolecules across the intestine, virtually all that are present in the gut may be effectively endocytosed and transmitted into the blood stream. The postnatal transmission of antibody from colostrum during this period provides the young animal with a spectrum of serum antibodies indistinguishable from that of its mother. It is established that even in utero the piglet is capable of mounting some response to antigenic challenge. Despite this, the ability of the young animal to respond may be influenced profoundly by the absorption of macromolecules (antibodies and antigens in colostrum and in sow's milk as well as antigens in the farrowing house) during the first hours after birth. These effects range from passive protection from infectious agents during the neonatal period to determining the precise nature of the immune response to antigens during later periods (e.g. at weaning).
At birth all cellular components of the immune system are represented but during the first few weeks of life dramatic changes occur in the number and distribution of these cells. Our histological studies have shown that shortly after birth the predominant T lymphocytes in the small intestine are T2+, T4− and T8−; whilst in other organs there are large numbers of conventional T4+ and T8+ cells. By 1 week of age there is a dramatic increase in the numbers of T4+ cells, whilst T8+ cells remain low, and only start to increase by week 7. Thus, changes in lymphocyte populations are occurring concurrent with increasing exposure to environmental antigens. The functional capacity of these cells also changes during this period and this process may be particularly affected by early weaning.
During the neonatal period an animal is presented with a vast array of antigenic material for the first time. How and when these antigens are presented may profoundly influence the capacity of the immune system to respond to them.
