Background: Neurosurgery is a high-risk specialty with a low margin of error. We aim to assess the risk of neurosurgeons being involved in medicolegal cases in Canada. Methods: This retrospective descriptive study evaluated ten years (2012-2021) of closed legal cases, college cases, and hospital complaints against neurosurgeons with data from the CMPA. Included cases were cranial cases, VP shunts, or cases where a catheter or wire was inserted into the brain. Cases excluded angiography, radiation, ultrasound, or percutaneous procedures. Results: We identified 77 cases (66 urgent or emergent). Neurosurgeons had a significantly higher medicolegal risk than the CMPA surgeon membership, however lower risk compared to all physician specialties. Legal cases accounted for 69% with favourable outcomes in 52%. Forty-one cases involved post-operative complications and 16 cases involved VP shunts. Multiple surgeons or residents could be involved spanning age groups and years in practice. Thirty-four cases had a harmful incident, 41% of these severe. The majority of cases occurred at urban centers. The average case duration was 41 months. Conclusions: This study provides a recent medicolegal analysis of cranial neurosurgery in Canada. We identified areas of common complaints and hope the data can be used to mitigate risk surgical risk in the future.

Demonstrating the equivalence of constructs is a key requirement for cross-cultural empirical research. The major purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how to assess measurement and functional equivalence or invariance using the 9-item, 3-factor Love of Money Scale (LOMS, a second-order factor model) and the 4-item, 1-factor Pay Level Satisfaction Scale (PLSS, a first-order factor model) across 29 samples in six continents (N = 5973). In step 1, we tested the configural, metric and scalar invariance of the LOMS and 17 samples achieved measurement invariance. In step 2, we applied the same procedures to the PLSS and nine samples achieved measurement invariance. Five samples (Brazil, China, South Africa, Spain and the USA) passed the measurement invariance criteria for both measures. In step 3, we found that for these two measures, common method variance was non-significant. In step 4, we tested the functional equivalence between the Love of Money Scale and Pay Level Satisfaction Scale. We achieved functional equivalence for these two scales in all five samples. The results of this study suggest the critical importance of evaluating and establishing measurement equivalence in cross-cultural studies. Suggestions for remedying measurement non-equivalence are offered.

Summary
Introduction
More than 25 years ago, Ashbaugh and colleagues described a series of patients whose striking but uniform clinical, physiologic, roentgenographic, and pathologic abnormalities distinguished them from other patients who developed respiratory failure. This syndrome has since become known as adult or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Despite extensive research and literature devoted to ARDS, overall mortality rates have remained in excess of 40%. The inability to find new therapeutic modalities that decrease mortality rates from this syndrome has been a source of disappointment in this field. Consequently, prevention or early intervention appears to be an important and necessary approach in the management of ARDS. The high mortality rate and lack of success of new interventions have also led to a reevaluation of our basic understanding of ARDS. Thus, revisiting the epidemiology of this syndrome is of paramount importance. By determining the incidence and establishing risk factors for ARDS, invaluable information required to develop preventative strategies or targeted early therapy may surface, offering the hope for improved outcomes in patients afflicted with this syndrome.
In this chapter, we begin by describing possible study designs used in determining epidemiologic features of any disease, including ARDS, in order to better appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of the existing literature. We then describe the major studies estimating the incidence, risk factors, and case-fatality rate of ARDS. We also briefly discuss the long-term outcomes of this illness. In order to provide the reader with the most reliable epidemiologic inferences from the literature, we have primarily based our comments on a systematic search, selection, and appraisal of the published literature.

Media coverage of litigation may affect perceptions and thereby behavior of litigants, judges, juries, legislators and business decisionmakers. Their behavior influences various legal, social, political and economic outcomes. For product liability verdicts during 1983 to 1996 involving automobile manufacturers, we examine the amount of coverage in several dozen newspapers. We find almost no articles reporting on any of 259 verdicts for the defendant. Econometric analysis focuses on determinants of the amount of coverage of 92 verdicts for plaintiffs, 16 of which include punitive damages. Key determinants include the award amount, the nature of injuries, the vehicle's recall history, and especially the existence of a punitive component of damages regardless of its size.
