Unsuckled mother rats given a 1 h suckling stimulus 3 h after subcutaneous injection of an exact dose of homogonic Strongyloides ratti allow fewer worms to develop in their intestines by day 8 than nulliparous rats (Wilson & Simpson, 1981). This effect is studied in more detail in terms of the length of time between weaning and stimulus (W → S) and injection and stimulus (I → S). It was observable with a W → S of 30 h but this and a period of 5 h were less effective than 24 h. With W → S constant at 24 h, significantly more worms developed in mothers when I → S was 24 h compared to 3 h and 10 h (P < 0·005). The data, combined with those from nulliparous controls, are presented as a measure of the change with time of numbers of larvae in that compartment of the system which gives access to the stimulated mammary gland. It is argued that the particular compartment is the local lymph node draining the injection site and that the kinetics deduced are applicable to migration in the rat in general

Summary
In 1994, Mattel created a Barbie™ doll that said, “Math is hard.” The Barbie Liberation Organization, a group composed of activists and media personalities, among others, protested against Barbie's perpetuation of gender-based stereotyping. The media publicized the case and discussions on gender stereotyping in children's toys ensued on and off the air, leading Mattel to withdraw the “math is hard” Barbie from the market.
However, did Barbie's frustration with math represent a reality in which girls and women, more than boys and men, find math to be hard? Benbow and Stanley (1980, 1983) found gender differences in performance on the mathematical section of the SAT (SAT-M) in boys and girls under the age of fourteen who were high in math achievement. The boys outperformed the girls by about half a standard deviation and were overrepresented by a ratio of 13:1 among students who scored above 700. Similarly, in a meta-analysis involving over three million participants, Hyde, Fennema, and Lamon (1990) found a gender difference favoring males that emerged from high school (d = 0.29) through college (d = 0.41), and into adulthood (d = 0.59). Finally, Brown and Josephs (1999) reported that the two most widely used standardized tests of mathematics in the United States, the SAT-M and the quantitative portion of the GRE (GRE-Q), revealed a gender difference in the order of half a standard deviation.
This gender difference can also be seen in the types of activities that females vs. males tend to pursue.

This study documents the development of hand and upper-extremity function in young children who have cerebral palsy (CP) with upper-extremity involvement using longitudinal data. Assessments of hand function and the quality of upper-extremity movement were conducted on 29 males and 22 females (mean age 36.2 months, SD 10.6; age range 16 to 60 months at baseline) and on four other occasions over 10 months. Linear mixed effects modeling was used to estimate average developmental curves and the degree of individual differences in the patterns of development which were conditional on the body-site distribution of CP and severity of impairments. Results indicate that hand function in this clinical population develops differently from overall upper-extremity skills with declines in function in upper-extremity skills being more common and pronounced among older children. However, there is substantial interindividual variation. Distribution of CP and severity of impairments were significant predictors of development. Results are discussed in terms of their clinical implications.
