Lead free niobate solid solutions can exhibit piezoelectric properties comparable to that of lead zirconate titanate piezoelectrics in the vicinity of its morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). Here we describe how (Na,K)NbO3 and (Na,K)NbO3-LiTaO3 solid solution thin films can be grown epitaxially by the hydrothermal method at temperatures of 200 °C or below in water and be made ferro- and piezoelectrically active by a simple 2 step post growth treatment.

Rutile and anatase TiO2 films were grown on glass substrates from acidic titanium precursor solutions from 60°C upwards. Anatase synthesized at 60°C had a crystallinity of 15% that increased to 54% for a growth temperature of 200°C. A similar crystallinity by conventional heat treatment of the 60°C material was attained only at 400°C. It is believed that more complete dehydration of titanium complexes at higher growth temperatures led to less disruption of the long range attractive forces required for the formation of the periodic crystalline lattice. Rutile films grown at 60°C were determined to have a refractive index of 2.4. This is lower than the bulk value of 2.65 because the as-synthesized rutile material was only 29% crystalline and also contained nano-sized pores.

Potassium tantalate powders were hydrothermally synthesized at 100 to 200 °C in 4 to 15 M aqueous KOH solutions. A defect pyrochlore, Kta2O5(OH). nH2O (n ≈ 1.4), was obtained at 4 M KOH, but at 7–12 M KOH, this pyrochlore was gradually replaced by a defect perovskite as the stable phase. At 15 M KOH, there was no intermediate pyrochlore, only a defect perovskite, 0.85Ta0.92O2.43(OH)0.57 0.15H2O. Synthesis at higher KOH concentrations led to greater incorporation of protons in the perovskite structures. The potassium vacancies required for charge compensation of incorporated protons could accommodate water molecules in the perovskite structure.

Heteroepitaxial KTaO3 thin films were synthesized by the hydrothermal method below 175 °C in highly alkaline aqueous KOH solutions. KTaO3 films synthesized in 7 M KOH solutions contained a defect pyrochlore phase that had (400) and (111) out-of-plane orientations. The (400) oriented pyrochlore islands were epitaxially related to the (100) SrTiO3 substrate while the (111) oriented pyrochlore islands had four in-plane variants. Pyrochlore-free KTaO3 films could be synthesized in a 15 M KOH solution. Pyrochlore-free films were also grown at 7 M KOH by delaying the introduction of the (100) SrTiO3 substrate into the synthesis solution until the conditions favoring the formation of the pyrochlore phase had dissipated.

Although epitaxial II:IV perovskite films like BaTiO3 and Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 have been grown by the hydrothermal method, there are hardly any reports on the growth of I:V perovskite thin films by this low temperature technique. In this study, thin films of NaNbO3, KTaO3 and KNbO3 were grown on (100) oriented single crystal SrTiO3 substrates by the hydrothermal method at 200°C and below. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that the as-synthesized films were epitaxial with one of their original cubic axes normal to the substrate (100) plane. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the films formed by an island growth mechanism. KTaO3 was also used as a buffer layer in the growth of KNbO3 films in order to investigate the effect of lattice mismatch on surface morphology and epitaxial quality, as determined by SEM and XRD rocking curve measurements, respectively.

Electrodeposition was used to grow epitaxially BaTiO3 thin films on SrTiO3 single-crystal substrates with La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) conducting buffer layers. The epitaxial films appeared to consist of very small (ø10 nm) particles. The film completely covered the substrate when the reaction was performed at temperatures between 60 and 90 °C with LSMO potentials of –0.5 to –1.0 V against a Pt counter-electrode. It appeared that an electrophoretic force, acting on BaTiO3 nuclei within the solution, facilitated the deposition of the film.
