Dispersion relations are obtained for surface waves propagating along plasma—vacuum and plasma—plasma interfaces in a direction perpendicular to a uniform magneto-static field (that lying parallel to the interface), by setting to zero reflexion coefficient for an incident plane wave. Complete solutions to the dispersion relations are presented for both cases and the results are displayed diagrammatically. Comparisons are made with the work of other authors.

The exact surface-wave dispersion relation is expressed in terms of elementary functions for a plasma characterized by a ‘resonance’ velocity distribution function. An approximate form of the relation is derived for the case when the thermal velocity spread is much less than c. The pure surface wave obtained by dropping the term responsible for Landau damping is compared with that predicted on the basis of a fluid model of the plasma. The effect of Landau damping is then investigated, both by analytic approximations and by computation. Two branches of the solution to the dispersion relation are found; and it is shown that the surface wave suffers increasingly severe damping as the frequency grows beyond 1/ √ 2 times the plasma frequency. It is argued that qualitatively similar damping would be present were the plasma to have a Maxwellian equilibrium distribution function.

The problem of a monochromatic plane electromagnetic wave incident from a vacuum onto a plasma slab is considered. The method of solution is based on the representation of the disturbance in the plasma layer as that generated by an appropriate current source in the complementary regions into which, for the purpose of the representation, the plasma is conceived to extend. The normal incidence case is treated first for both the specular reflexion and the absorption boundary conditions, with the extension to oblique incidence following in a later section of the paper.

It is emphasized that the dispersion relation for surface waves at a vacuum—plasma interface can be obtained by setting the reflexion coefficient to zero The relations for warm, collisional and hot, collisionless plasmas are derived in this way, and shown to be inagreement with previous results. The former relation is expressed explicitly as a cubic equation for y = 2c2k12/ω2p, as a function of x = 2ω2/ω2p − 1, where k1 is thecomponent of the wave vector along the interface, a is the frequency and w the plasma frequency; and the nature of the three branches of the y(x) curve is analyzed in detail. The rotation of the vacuum wave vector as the frequency runs from 0 to ∞ is displayed, and it is established that one and only one branch corresponds, in the collisionlesscase, to pure surface waves.

The problem of the penetration of a longitudinal electric field into a bounded plasma layer is considered. The method of solution is based on the representation of the disturbance in the plasma layer as that generated by an appropriate charge source in the complementary regions into which, for the purpose of the representation, the plasma is conceived to extend. The problem is solved for each of the three boundary conditions in common use: these are the specular refiexion, the absorption and the diffuse scattering boundary conditions.
