Exploring the anthelmintic properties of Australian native shrubs with respect to their potential role in livestock grazing systems

We measured in vitro anthelmintic activity in extracts from 85 species of Australian native shrub, with a view to identifying species able to provide a degree of worm control in grazing systems. Approximately 40% of the species showed significant activity in inhibiting development of Haemonchus contortus larvae. The most active extracts showed IC50 values of 60–300 μg/ml. Pre-incubation with polyvinylpolypyrrolidine removed the activity from some extracts, implicating tannins as the bioactive agent, while in other cases the pre-incubation had no effect, indicating the presence of other anthelmintic compounds. Plant reproductive maturity (onset of flowering or fruiting) was associated with increasing anthelmintic activity in some species. Variability was observed between plants of the same species growing in different environments, while variation between individual plants of the same species within a single field suggests the existence of distinct chemotypes. Significant activity against adult H. contortus worms in vitro was also demonstrated in a limited number of extracts tested against this life stage. Our study indicates that there is potential for Australian native shrubs to play an anthelmintic role in grazing systems, and highlights some plant biology factors which will need to be considered in order to maximize any anthelmintic effects.

Due to ruminal biohydrogenation, the increase in muscle polyunsaturated fatty acids (P) in ruminant tissue is small relative to dietary supply. Some biohydrogenation is desirable since conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), considered to have human health promoting properties, results from incomplete ruminal biohydrogenation of linoleic acid and by tissue desaturation of ruminally derived trans-vaccenic acid (TVA). Noci et al., (2004) reported that controlling the rate of oil release from linseed and camelina to the rumen increased the efficiency of transfer of dietary P to tissue while allowing the production of CLA. Increasing the P concentration, in particular the longer carbon chain P, predispose lipids to oxidation which is believed to be linked to muscle pigment oxidation and consequently to colour instability. The objective of this study was to compare the effects of the strategies used by Noci et al., (2004) to protect dietary lipids from ruminal biohydrogenation, on the colour and lipid stability of muscle.

Eight-hundred-and-fifty-two pigs were weaned at 5 weeks of age, and at an average weight of 8·5 kg were allocated in pens of 14 or 15 to diets having 13·6 or 14·6 MJ digestible energy (DE)/kg combined with 11·0 or 11·8 g lysine per kg.
Over a 5-week experimental period, pigs receiving the diet with the higher DE content had a lower daily feed intake, improved feed conversion efficiency (FCE) but a similar rate of gain to those getting less DE/kg. Efficiency of utilization of energy was poorer when DE content was higher.
Increasing lysine level increased daily feed intake and rate of gain while improving FCE. There were significant energy x lysine interactions. At the lower energy density, increasing the lysine level resulted in increased daily feed intakes whereas the reverse was the case at the higher energy density. Daily gain increased when lysine level was increased at the lower energy density but was unaffected at the higher density. Efficiency of energy utilization was improved by increasing lysine at the higher but not at the lower energy level.

The live-weight changes of 48 sows were recorded over three reproductive cycles. All sows were given standard amounts of feed in gestation and one of four energy allowances during lactation. The daily intakes of digestible energy during lactation ranged from 12·2 to 182·2 Meal in the first, 122·9 to 192·6 Meal in the second and 132·2 to 202·2 Meal in the third lactation. Weight change in lactation responded to energy intake; sows on the lowest energy intake lost weight whilst those on the highest intake gained. At weaning of their third litters, sows on the highest energy allowance weighed 44 kg more than those on the lowest level and this was equivalent to a carcass difference of 372·3 kg at slaughter.
All the sows were slaughtered after the third litters had been weaned and the carcasses were dissected into lean, subcutaneous fat+skin, and bone. Sows from all treatments had less subcutaneous fat+skin and more muscle and bone than non-pregnant gilts killed at a mean weight of 129 kg, a weight equivalent to that of the experimental animals at their first mating.
The reduction in fat reserves was linearly correlated with dietary energy intake of the sows. Sows receiving the lowest energy intake in lactation possessed fat reserves which were estimated to be only 25% as great as in gilts comparable to those used to initiate the experiment. This reduction in body reserves has implications with regard to the long-term effects of feeding lactating sows low intakes of energy during 6-week lactations.

Twenty-four gilts were used at each of two centres in an experiment designed to examine the effects of dietary energy intake during lactation on yield and composition of sows' milk and the growth of their litters. Gestation feed intake was standardized at 2 kg per day supplying 6·28 Meal digestible energy (DE) and 280 g crude protein. The energy levels fed during lactation ranged from 12·2 to 18·25 Meal DE per day for gilts, 12·9 to 19·6 Meal DE per day for second parity and from 13·2 to 20·25 Meal DE per day for third parity sows. Daily crude protein intake and amino acid balance ofthe protein were kept constant.
In the first lactation milk yield and composition and growth of litters were not influenced by dietary energy intake. In the second lactation milk yield was depressed by lower energy intakes and this was reflected in litter weights at 21 though not at 42 days. In the third lactation lower energy intakes seriously depressed milk yield and daily output of milk nutrients. On the lowest level of energy, milk yield was 32% lower at day 24 and 20% lower at day 41 of lactation than on the highest energy level. The corresponding depressions in litter weights were 17·2 and 13·5% at 21 and 42 days respectively.

1. Five hundred and fifty-two pigs were used in an experiment having six treatments. High and low protein rations were given (a) unsupplemented, (b) supplemented with 0·1% copper sulphate (CuSO4·5H2O) and (c) supplemented with 0·1% copper sulphate and 0·025% zinc carbonate (ZnCO3).
2. Performance was significantly reduced and 18 pigs died from copper toxicosis, when the low protein ration supplemented with copper sulphate was fed.
3. There were no indications of toxicity and performance was equal to the controls when the low protein diet supplemented with copper and zinc was fed.
4. The addition of copper to the high protein diet slightly reduced performance and six pigs died from copper toxicosis.
5. The addition of copper and zinc to the high protein diet improved growth rate and eliminated the toxicity associated with copper supplementation.
6. No significant treatment effects on haemoglobin or packed cell volume were observed, other than a small effect of protein level on PCV.
7. Copper supplementation of the diets significantly increased liver and kidney copper levels and liver zinc levels. It reduced liver and kidney iron contents. The addition of copper and zinc to the diet reduced the increase in liver copper associated with copper supplementation, and increased the level of zinc in both livers and kidneys.

Since, under Irish conditions, the source of protein used in pig rations often varies from one area to another, an experiment was conducted to determine the accumulation of copper in the tissues of pigs given the commonly-used
protein sources in diets containing 250 ppm of supplemental copper. The protein sources compared were (a) white-fish meal (370 ppm Cu), (b) soya bean meal (17 ppm. Cu), (c) roller-dried skim milk (2 ppm Cu), and (d) a mixture of soya bean meal and meat and bone meal (5 ppm Cu) (Table 1). The minerals, vitamins and copper sulphate were premixed with about 5 kg. of barley and distributed over the total feed before mixing. The copper sulphate was sieved to remove coarse particles. Analyses of complete feed mixtures are shown in Table 1. As far as possible, the rations were balanced for crude protein, calcium and phosphorus.
