Summary
Scope
High-throughput and combinatorial research on biomaterials aims at the rapid development of new materials and the establishment of structure–function relationships. Therefore, knowledge of the chemistry of each material and its impact on physical properties is essential to understand the effect on its function as a biomaterial. A tutorial on basic physical and chemical properties of (polymeric) materials highlights these features and can be found in the first part of this chapter. The second part gives an overview of relevant techniques that can be used to screen these material properties in high throughput. In addition, several examples are described in which these methods are used to develop structure–function relationships between material properties and biological performance.
Basic principles: physical and chemical properties of polymeric biomaterials
Chemistry is a constant factor from which the performance of most (polymeric) biomaterials can be predicted, but this extrapolation becomes less obvious when numerous materials are mixed in huge combinatorial libraries. Therefore, researchers are becoming increasingly involved in high-throughput material research when successful correlations between biological performance and physico-chemical material properties are to be made. This accelerating trend can be extracted from many studies where high-throughput technologies are successfully applied to measure physical properties and biological performance of many different polymeric biomaterials. Physical properties such as hardness, topography and hydrophilicity are known to be important parameters in the biological evaluation of materials, because they allow or block the adhesion of biological compounds which is required to allow cell-spreading, migration, proliferation and differentiation. These properties are naturally different for every material or combination of materials, and relate primarily to the variable properties on the chemical level (molecular structure, functional groups and degradation). Therefore, the chemistry of a biomaterial directly contributes to its interaction with biological environments.

Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of infections in deployed service members. Based on a molecular epidemiological study of 182 MRSA isolates from patients in three U.S. Army combat support hospitals in separate regions in Iraq, USA300 clone was the most predominant (80%) pulsotype. This finding suggested that strain carriage from the home country by military personnel is epidemiologically more important than local acquisition.

We report results of high-resolution x-ray diffraction, dc magnetometry and Raman scattering on the quaternary alkali and ternary mixed alkali-alkaline earth fullerene compounds Na2RbxCs1−x C60 (0 < x < 1) and Rb3−δ BaδC60 (δ ∼ 0.4 and 2.0). These have the same cubic space lattices as K3C60 and Rb3C60 however the former exhibit long-range orientational correlations with Pa3 symmetry and the latter have N > 3 delocalized electrons per molecule. We show that the dependence of Tc on lattice constant is much steeper for the ordered as compared to the merohedrally disordered phases with N = 3, and that within the constraint of cubic symmetry Tc decreases significantly with increasing N > 3, in disagreement with some theoretical predictions.

The role of interfacial exchange coupling in the magnetic behavior of metal oxide materials has been investigated through the study of Fe3O4/NiO superlattices. We report results on a series of superlattices grown where one bilayer constituent was held to a fixed thickness while varying the other from single unit cell dimensions upward. High crystalline quality was confirmed by XRD, RHEED and neutron diffraction. Magnetization profiles show substantial deviations from bulklike iron oxide results, with an increase in domain rotation energies observed in the superlattices over that of bulk iron oxide (increasing with NiO layer thickness) indicating the strong nature of Fe3O4/NiO interfacial linkage. Neutron scattering at elevated temperatures shows that the NiO remains ordered above the 523 K bulk Néel temperature. This suggests that at least a portion of the NiO within a layer remains ordered well above the Néel temperature, with an increase in effective Néel transition temperature that approaches the Fe3O4 Curie temperature in the limit of very thin NiO layers. Although the exchange coupling dominates these effects, strain also plays an important role.

The volatile products from the thermal reaction (414°C) of silane in excess acetylene are hydrogen, ethylene, vinylsilane, ethynylsilane, vinylethynylsilane (possibly divinylsilane) and ethynyl-divinylsilane (1,2). We have reexamined this reaction using a 3 C2 H2/1 SiH4 reaction mixture and have obtained product yield curves for these products versus percent silane loss. We have also found that product curves are unaffected when propylene at pressures equal to that of acetylene is also present. Since only trace quantities of propylsilane are produced in the presence of propylene, we can rule out reactions involving silyl radicals. Thus the SiH4−C2H2 reaction involves silylene and silene intermediates. The products can be explained by a mechanism similar to one proposed by Barton and Burns (3).

Summary
TO GREGORY THE GREAT
The ways in which the Bible was interpreted by the Church of the first six centuries had already been partly determined by the Christian communities of the apostolic age itself. From the earliest stage to which the tradition of the Church can be traced, the Scriptures of the Old Testament had been interpreted as a book about Christ. The decisive act of God in human history had taken place; the Gospel events stood as the central and focal point of God's dealings with mankind. The promises to Israel, and the long chain of events in which, according to the Scriptures, these promises were worked out in divine judgements and in saving acts of mercy and deliverance, had reached their fulfilment in the life, death and Resurrection of Christ. This fulfilment could only be apprehended as such in the light of the ancient promises and the entire course of Israel's history, as this had been interpreted in the prophetic-historical tradition of the Old Testament. Conversely, the Scriptures could be rightly understood only when they were seen in the new perspective of the age of fulfilment which had now dawned. God had so acted in Christ that the focal point of history, which gave meaning to the whole process, no longer lay in the remote past, in the deliverance from Egypt, the Sinai Covenant and the entry into the Promised Land. A greater exodus had taken place, a new covenant had been established, and the promised age of the Spirit, the last days foretold by the prophets, had now begun.
