Summary
Introduction
Towards the end of 2019, media reports emerged of a team of student researchers at the University of Copenhagen developing a chewing gum that helps women detect ovulation: when the ‘Ovulaid’ gum changes colour, women will know they’ve reached their ‘fertile window’, the days of the menstrual cycle when a woman can become pregnant (Russell, 2019). Ovulation, the releasing of an egg from the ovaries, is triggered by the rise and fall of the so-called ‘sex’ hormones, oestrogen, progesterone and luteinizing hormone. These hormonal changes can (sometimes) be detected through saliva, urine and temperature. Ovulation biosensors, like the chewing gum, claim to help women detect and predict their ovulation patterns and thus make conception easier by indicating the times at which they are most likely to conceive (Wilkinson, 2016). They can also, of course, be used to avoid conception.
Ovulation biosensors are located within a wider array of ‘FemTech’ devices/ products comprising an ever-increasing number of fertility-related apps and devices that have come onto the global market, each attempting to offer something new such as more in-depth data or greater levels of accuracy. Media stories, like the one cited, frequently accompany these developments, focusing not only on the increasing use of such devices (see, for example, Weigel, 2016) but also on the poor reliability of fertility tracking (see, for example, Kleinman, 2021). The FemTech industry (services, products and software designed to focus on women’s health) is increasingly subjected to public scrutiny. Many self-tracking apps and devices encourage women to collect and store large quantities of bodily data online, and controversies have arisen around companies’ capture and on-selling of this data (see, for example, Shadwell, 2019). In an important case, in 2021 Flo Health Inc, (owners of ‘Flo’, a period and ovulation tracking app with more than 100 million users), settled with the US Federal Trade Commission, who proved the company was sharing users’ data with third parties, including Google and Facebook, despite having promised to keep it secure (Federal Trade Commission, 2021).
FemTech is also increasingly the subject of social research, as we describe later in this chapter. A key strand of this work highlights issues of data privacy and the commercialization of women’s fertility. Science and technology studies (STS) and feminist technoscience studies (FTS) approaches are central to this field, and we situate our research in this space.

Introduction:
The Pinnacle3 Auto-Planning (AP) package is an automated inverse planning tool employing a multi-sequence optimisation algorithm. The nature of the optimisation aims to improve the overall quality of radiotherapy plans but at the same time may produce higher modulation, increasing plan complexity and challenging linear accelerator delivery capability.
Methods and materials:Thirty patients previously treated with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) to the prostate with or without pelvic lymph node irradiation were replanned with locally developed AP techniques for step-and-shoot IMRT (AP-IMRT) and volumetric-modulated arc therapy (AP-VMAT). Each case was also planned with VMAT using conventional inverse planning. The patient cohort was separated into two groups, those with a single primary target volume (PTV) and those with dual PTVs of differing prescription dose levels. Plan complexity was assessed using the modulation complexity score.
Results:Plans produced with AP provided equivalent or better dose coverage to target volumes whilst effectively reducing organ at risk (OAR) doses. For IMRT plans, the use of AP resulted in a mean reduction in bladder V50Gy by 4·2 and 4·7 % (p ≤ 0·01) and V40Gy by 4·8 and 11·3 % (p < 0·01) in the single and dual dose level cohorts, respectively. For the rectum, V70Gy, V60Gy and V40Gy were all reduced in the dual dose level AP-VMAT plans by an average of 2·0, 2·7 and 7·3 % (p < 0·01), respectively. A small increase in plan complexity was observed only in dual dose level AP plans.
Findings:The automated nature of AP led to high quality treatment plans with improvement in OAR sparing and minimised the variation in achievable dose planning metrics when compared to the conventional inverse planning approach.

Background: Social anxiety is a common problem among people who are recovering from psychosis. At present there is no evidence based psychological treatment targeting social anxiety in this population. Cognitive Bias Modification for Interpretation (CBM-I) has been shown to be effective in reducing social anxiety in people who do not have a history of psychosis. Aims: To assess the feasibility and acceptability of the CBM-I methodology for use in a clinical setting with people who are experiencing social anxiety following an episode of psychosis. Method: Eight participants with social anxiety were recruited from an early intervention service. A single session of computerized CBM-I was conducted, with mood and cognitive interpretation bias being assessed before and after the session. Results: All participants reported an improvement in mood immediately following the CBM-I session (n = 8). For those participants who had a negative interpretation bias, none became more negative following the CBM-I session, with three out of six participants showing a beneficial change. Conclusion: These results suggest that CBM-I is acceptable for use with people who are experiencing social anxiety following a psychotic episode. Further research looking at how CBM-I could be made more interactive and producing more applicable scenarios for use in a clinical setting is recommended.

In order to assess the value of a group program for long-stay elderly patients in an acute care hospital, eight patient outcomes were compared over a six month period within the group and on the nursing units. The activity program was designed to help patients maintain or improve their functional levels while waiting for placement. All patients improved or maintained their functional levels in the group, but these outcomes were not consistently transferred to the nursing units. More intensive geriatric rehabilitation and attention to the unit milieu appear to be needed to maintain gains and to improve functional abilities of long-stay elderly patients in the acute hospital setting.
