Summary
The train rocked back and forth as it carried me on my journey to school. I was riding a New York City subway, making my way to class at the City College of New York. I was dimly aware of the D-train stopping and starting again on a trip that I had made hundreds of times before. This time, however, I found myself not at CCNY but in midtown Manhattan, well past the college. The culprit: an article in a social psychology journal on cognitive dissonance. The authors tried to persuade me that people who expend a high degree of unpleasant effort to join a fictitious club actually like that club better than people who do not expend effort. Although the prediction seemed altogether impossible, it fit so nicely with the theory that generated it. How fascinating, how exciting, how relevant! And so, a boy from the Bronx jettisoned his would-be career as a mathematics major and became a social psychologist – or at least a social psychology wannabe.

The Subglacial Antarctic Lakes Scientific Access (SALSA) Project accessed Mercer Subglacial Lake using environmentally clean hot-water drilling to examine interactions among ice, water, sediment, rock, microbes and carbon reservoirs within the lake water column and underlying sediments. A ~0.4 m diameter borehole was melted through 1087 m of ice and maintained over ~10 days, allowing observation of ice properties and collection of water and sediment with various tools. Over this period, SALSA collected: 60 L of lake water and 10 L of deep borehole water; microbes >0.2 μm in diameter from in situ filtration of ~100 L of lake water; 10 multicores 0.32–0.49 m long; 1.0 and 1.76 m long gravity cores; three conductivity–temperature–depth profiles of borehole and lake water; five discrete depth current meter measurements in the lake and images of ice, the lake water–ice interface and lake sediments. Temperature and conductivity data showed the hydrodynamic character of water mixing between the borehole and lake after entry. Models simulating melting of the ~6 m thick basal accreted ice layer imply that debris fall-out through the ~15 m water column to the lake sediments from borehole melting had little effect on the stratigraphy of surficial sediment cores.

Background: Appropriate testing of blood procalcitonin (PCT) can potentially inform antibiotic de-escalation in patients with severe infections. When used along with observed clinical improvements, PCT testing can support antimicrobial stewardship. However, this testing must be used optimally to ensure that it is actionable, cost-effective, and provides patient benefit. Although this test is widely used, little is known about the appropriateness of this testing in select populations. Methods: In this retrospective review, we evaluated PCT monitoring patterns and appropriateness of use and relationship to antibiotic days of therapy in a system of community hospitals. We evaluated the use of PCT testing in patients with known confounders, namely pregnancy, chronic kidney disease, or neutropenia, which we classified as “inappropriate use” because these conditions can affect the interpretation of PCT results. We also evaluated the relationship between PCT testing and antibiotic days of therapy for patients with sepsis, pneumonia, or lower respiratory tract infections. Results: In a 1-year period, ∼206,302 PCT tests were performed at 146 facilities, an average of ∼1,413 per facility per year. Approximately 27.7% of these tests were given to patients who were pregnant or had a confounding comorbidity such as chronic kidney disease or neutropenia. Of these “inappropriate” tests, >90% were given to patients with chronic kidney disease. Older patients (aged 60–80 years, n = 93,021) were more likely to receive a PCT test while also having a confounding comorbidities; 24% of older patients with a PCT test also had chronic kidney disease. Of all patients with a PCT test and chronic kidney disease, ∼76% were also diagnosed with either sepsis, pneumonia, or lower respiratory tract infections. Conclusions: Confounding conditions can affect PCT levels independently of infection. Additionally, some clinicians use PCT tests as probes for other physiological maladies. This analysis demonstrated that there is opportunity for education about the appropriate use of this test, how to interpret results in the presence of confounding conditions, and how to transform PCT test results into actions that facilitate antimicrobial stewardship and better patient care.

This research article addresses an important issue related to how teachers can support Aboriginal secondary school students' learning of science. Drawn from a larger project that investigated the study of vertebrates using Queensland Indigenous knowledges and Montessori Linnaean materials to engage Indigenous secondary school students, this article focuses on the three-staged lessons from that study. Using an Action Research approach and working with participants from one secondary high school in regional Queensland with a high Indigenous population, there were several important findings. First, the materials and the three-staged lessons generated interest in learning Eurocentric science knowledge. Second, repetition, freedom and unhurried inclusion of foreign science knowledges strengthened students' Aboriginal personal identity as well as identities as science learners. Third, privileging of local Aboriginal knowledge and animal language gave rise to meaningful and contextualised Linnaean lessons and culturally responsive practices.

This paper reports on an Action Research project that investigated the integration of Aboriginal and Western knowledge into science learning in a Montessori classroom in regional Queensland, Australia. Drawing on the local knowledge of fauna of community members, the study explored the teaching of science to 12-year 8–9 students in an Aboriginal independent high school in Queensland. The overall study covered 83 lessons that included an initial Short-beaked echidna study. It applied thematic analysis to data to explore the effect of this integrated approach on students’ pride in heritage, cultural knowledge, learning and the Linnaean zoology taxonomy. Results revealed that the contextualisation of Aboriginal and Western science knowledge strengthened students’ Aboriginal personal identity as well as identities as science learners and status of local Aboriginal knowledge.

We study the expected value of the length Ln of the minimum spanning tree of the complete graph Kn when each edge e is given an independent uniform [0, 1] edge weight. We sharpen the result of Frieze [6] that limn→∞

We analyse Jim Propp's $P$-machine, a simple deterministic process that simulates a random walk on ${\mathbb Z}^d$ to within a constant. The proof of the error bound relies on several estimates in the theory of simple random walks and some careful summing. We mention three intriguing conjectures concerning sign-changes and unimodality of functions in the linear span of $\{p(\cdot,{\bf x}) : {\bf x} \in {\mathbb Z}^d\}$, where $p(n,{\bf x})$ is the probability that a walk beginning from the origin arrives at ${\bf x}$ at time $n$.

Thin copper films have been deposited on single crystal copper substrates and characterized using a UHV Scanning Tunneling Microscope to probe the effect of atomic insertions during hyperthermal ion deposition. At low temperatures, atomic insertions are predicted to provide a net downhill current that offsets the roughening effect due to uphill “Schwoebel” currents leading to a net smoothing of the surface. Films have been grown at several different energies targeted to observe a crossover from insertion driven smoothing to adatom-vacancy dominated roughening. Copper thin films are deposited near 20 eV using a mass selected ion deposition system that allows precise control (+/− 2 eV) over the energy of constituent atoms. Experimental observations are compared with a sophisticated Kinetic Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics hybrid (KMC-MD) simulation.

In certain cases, the incidence energy of constituent atoms activates an atomistic insertion mechanism, which decreases the surface roughness of metal thin films. In an effort to probe this effect, homoepitaxial copper films were grown using a mass/energy selected direct ion deposition technique that allows precise control of the incidence energy. Surface roughness is measured using a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) within the same UHV surface analysis system. The activation of the insertion mechanism near 20 eV triggers smoother crystal growth. The beneficial effects begin to be obscured by adatom/vacancy creation near 30 eV. A sophisticated Kinetic Monte Carlo/Molecular Dynamics (KMC-MD) model supports this interpretation.
