Some recent researches on the evaporation of water from soil are reviewed.
Experiments on the evaporation of water from a soil paste spread in shallow pans showed that the drying proceeded very irregularly over the soil mass. Considerable portions became almost completely dry whilst other portions remained very wet. There was a rough relationship between the form of the dry patch and the shape of the corresponding evaporation rate curves.
An improvement in technique was effected by exposing the soil in thin layers below glass plates. Under these conditions, reproducible results were obtained. Soil and kaolin, but not sand, gave considerable linear portions over the region of decreasing rate of evaporation. Tests on soil exposed as central discs, or peripheral rings, and on partially covered full plates, showed that, owing to the type of air currents set up, the drying was largely confined to the outer edges during the early stages.

The extracellular subtilisin-like protease activity of several fungal pathogens of nematodes, insects and plants was recorded after batch cultivation. Nematophagous and entomophagous isolates of Verticillium, Paecilomyces, Beauveria and Metarhizium produced Suc-(Ala)2-Pro-Phe-pNA hydrolysing enzymes that differed in serological properties based on Western blot analysis with polyclonal antibodies. The antibodies used were raised against the main subtilisin-like proteases from one species from each of the four genera. From each strain of V. chlamydosporium tested, between one and four isoforms with different pI values were separated by isoelectric focusing and visualized by enzymoblots. The occurrence of multiple isoforms with unique N-terminal sequences in single strains might suggest the presence of subtilisin gene families. Using as a probe a fragment of the Pr1 gene from M. anisopliae, RFLPs were observed that confirmed qualitative differences between subtilisin-like genes within and between species. In contrast to these pathogens of invertebrates, plant-pathogenic species of Verticillium did not produce subtilisin-like proteases, nor were homologous genes detected. Such activity, however, and the corresponding genes, were detected in species weakly pathogenic to plants, or saprotrophs.

Healthcare providers need to be aware of the facts regarding the environmental impact of regulated medical wastes and be prepared to voice concern over unnecessary and costly regulations. The wash-ups of waste, a small percentage of which was medical waste, on the beaches on New York and New Jersey in the summers of 1987 and 1988 prompted an immediate response by state and federal governments. Although it was demonstrated that this medical waste did not originate in healthcare facilities,' the public demanded that their elected representatives do something about what they perceived to be the degradation of the environment and a risk to public health caused by “uncontrolled dumping” of “medical wastes” into the ocean. As a result of these and other occurrences, several environmental concerns regarding the treatment and disposal of medical waste were voiced by the public and acknowledged by the legislators. These included the following: aesthetic damage to the environment; potential public health problems associated with infectious agents in medical waste; and potential environmental contamination with hazardous chemicals and radioactivity associated with medical wastes.
