The Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey (RACS) is the first large-area survey to be conducted with the full 36-antenna Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope. RACS will provide a shallow model of the ASKAP sky that will aid the calibration of future deep ASKAP surveys. RACS will cover the whole sky visible from the ASKAP site in Western Australia and will cover the full ASKAP band of 700–1800 MHz. The RACS images are generally deeper than the existing NRAO VLA Sky Survey and Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey radio surveys and have better spatial resolution. All RACS survey products will be public, including radio images (with $\sim$ 15 arcsec resolution) and catalogues of about three million source components with spectral index and polarisation information. In this paper, we present a description of the RACS survey and the first data release of 903 images covering the sky south of declination $+41^\circ$ made over a 288-MHz band centred at 887.5 MHz.

Objectives: The effect of sleep disordered breathing (SDB) on driving performance in older adults has not been extensively investigated, especially in those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between severity measures of SDB and a simulated driving task in older adults with and without MCI. Methods: Nineteen older adults (age ≥50) meeting criteria for MCI and 23 age-matched cognitively intact controls underwent neuropsychological assessment and a driving simulator task in the evening before a diagnostic sleep study. Results: There were no differences in driving simulator performance or SDB severity between the two groups. In patients with MCI, a higher oxygen desaturation index (ODI) was associated with an increased number of crashes on the simulator task, as well as other driving parameters such as steering and speed deviation. Poorer driving performance was also associated with poorer executive functioning (set-shifting) but the relationship between ODI and crashes was independent of executive ability. Conclusions: While driving ability did not differ between older adults with and without MCI, oxygen saturation dips in MCI were related to worse driving performance. These results suggest that decreased brain integrity may render those with SDB particularly vulnerable to driving accidents. In older adults, both cognition and SDB need to be considered concurrently in relation to driving ability. (JINS, 2017, 23, 502–510)

We describe a versatile infrared camera/spectrograph, IRIS, designed and constructed at the Anglo-Australian Observatory for use on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. A variety of optical configurations can be selected under remote control to provide several direct image scales and a few low-resolution spectroscopic formats. Two cross-dispersed transmission echelles are of novel design, as is the use of a modified Bowen-Burch system to provide a fast f/ratio in the widest-field option. The drive electronics includes a choice of readout schemes for versatility, and continuous display when the array is not taking data, to facilitate field acquisition and focusing.
The linearity of the detector has been studied in detail. Although outwardly good, slight nonlinearities prevent removal of fixed-pattern noise from the data without application of a cubic linearising function.
Specific control and data-reduction software has been written. We describe also a scanning mode developed for spectroscopic imaging.

We report herein the syntheses and optical limiting characterizations of a series of porphyrin-C60 dyads in which the porphyrin and C60 moieties are held within close proximity of one another by an o-phenylene bridge. The electron-donating ability of the porphyrin moiety in the dyads is systematically varied through chemical modification. This allows us to control the ease of electron transfer from the porphyrin to the C60 moiety in these dyads. Optical limiting measurements at 532 nm using 3-ns pulses show that the limiting performances of the dyads are poorer relative to their model compounds. This could be due to an ultra-short lifetime for the charge-separated species or a depopulation of the triplet states by photoinduced electron transfer. The optical limiting performances of the free-base porphyrin-C60 dyads are also related to the electron- donating abilities of the meso substituents of the porphyrin moieties. 12PorphyC60 displays better limiting performance at 532 nm (with 3-ns and 15-ns pulses) compared to Val12PorphyC60. This trend has been rationalized in terms of the relative energies of the first excited singlet and triplet states of the fullerene moiety and the charge-separated state of the dyads.

The optical limiting performances of donor-buckminsterfullerene (C60) dyads have hitherto been unreported. The predicted large excited state absorption cross-section of such dyads in their charge-separated states would enable them to exhibit enhanced optical limiting relative to their individual components. We report herein the synthesis and optical limiting characterization of a novel porphyrin-buckminsterfullerene dyad, in which the porphyrin and C60 moieties are held within close proximity of one another by an o-phenylene bridge. The porphyrin-C60 dyad was synthesized via 1,3-dipolar azomethine ylide cycloaddition, and was obtained in 37.0% yield. Optical limiting measurements at 532 nm using 3-ns pulses show that the limiting performance of the dyad is poorer compared to its model compounds. Possible reasons for the worsened performance of the dyad will be discussed.

Vanadium dioxide exhibits a semiconductor to metallic phase transition at a temperature of about 68 °C. This can be exploited in the form of optical thin film structures which will exhibit non-linear behaviour when exposed to pulsed infra-red radiation. Since the phase transition is structural in nature, it is of interest to explore the temporal and spatial properties when irradiated with pulsed laser sources. Fast CMT detectors have been used to resolve nanosecond temporal detail on an experimental basis and the spatial charateristics have been explored using a simple adiabatic heating model. The dynamic transmission values measured for VO2 devices are complex combinations of the temporally and spatially varying characteristics of the film.

Nano-composites allow a materials engineering approach to be exploited to realise specific characteristics in optical thin film ensembles. For example, films can be produced with refractive indices determined by their average composition on the basis of effective medium approximations, so freeing optical designers from the constraints imposed in pure materials. A summary is presented of the progress made in a fundamental study of films based on diverse materials such as fluorides and sulphides, fabricated using molecular beam deposition techniques. The film properties (eg refractive index, surface morphology, environmental stability) are correlated with microstructure (as determined by cross-sectional TEM techniques). The enhanced properties of the films are discussed in relation to the realisation of periodically modulated graded-index structures of the type required for optical filter applications.

A number of materials are available which exhibit thermochromic properties. These include the superionic materials (eg silver sulphide), phase transition materials (eg vanadium dioxide) and mixed valence materials (eg SmS). Such materials can be exploited as optical thin films and when incorporated into multilayer structures exhibit non-linear properties, particularly at wavelengths in the infra-red (1–12μm). The response of such devices is dependant on the degree of temperature rise produced in the active material, which in turn is dependant on the optical properties of the material and the heat sinking characteristics of the substrate. A summary is presented highlighting techniques for film deposition, multilayer device design and temporal response characteristics measured under conditions of pulsed irradiation.

A study is reported of field-induced effects in ferroelectric materials using optical interferometry. One of the techniques used is based on the use of a WYKO TOPO3 system and provides a three dimensional representation of field-induced displacement. The information provided is supplemented by optical transmission measurements on thin sections of material fabricated to allow interference fringing to be seen. Initial work has centred on the characterisation of ceramic PLZT material. Both transverse and longitudinal electrode configurations have been studied and have highlighted the magnitude of the effects possible and the importance of electrostrictive processes in determining the direction of deformation. These can result in anomalously high strain gradients over distances of the order of 50-100µm. This behaviour is compared with that found for preliminary samples of thin film ferroelectric materials.
