Background
Questions remain about the long-term health impacts of the 1991 Gulf War on its veterans.
AimsTo measure psychological disorders in Australian Gulf War veterans and a military comparison group and to explore any association with exposure to Gulf War-related psychological stressors.
MethodPrevalences of DSM–IV psychological disorders were measured using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview. Gulf War-related psychological stressors were measured using a service experience questionnaire.
ResultsA total of 31% of male Gulf War veterans and 21% of the comparison group met criteria for a DSM–IVdisorder first present in the post-Gulf War period. The veterans were at greater risk of developing post-Gulf War anxiety disorders including post-traumatic stress disorder, affective disorders and substance use disorders. The prevalence of such disorders remained elevated a decade after deployment. The findings can be explained partly as a ‘war-deployment effect‘. There was a strong dose–response relationship between psychological disorders and number of reported Gulf War-related psychological stressors.
ConclusionsService in the 1991 Gulf War is associated with increased risk of psychological disorders and these are related to stressful experiences.

The deformation transients associated with changes in stress and strain rate have been studied as a means of determining the controlling deformation mechanisms in NiAl. Stress change experiments in tension, and strain rate change tests in compression have been performed on single crystals of NiAl at temperatures between 850 and 1200°C. The orientation dependence of these transients was studied by testing in the hard [001] orientation and a soft [223] orientation. Strain rate change experiments suggest increased contribution from structure-controlled mechanisms in hard oriented crystals. Stress change experiments in samples tested along the hard orientation produce transients that are characteristic of the evolution of a stable dislocation substructure. In soft oriented crystals, however, stress change transients suggest that deformation is not significantly affected by the formation of a dislocation substructure. These results are consistent with observations of dislocation substructure formation and strain hardening in hard oriented crystals.

The evolution of dislocation substructures formed in single crystals of NiAl by tension creep testing at temperatures between 1123 K and 1473 K has been studied. Significant differences in the dislocation structure are evident in samples tested in different orientations.
For samples tested in soft orientations, where glide of (001) dislocations is easy, some interacting (001) dislocations can be found. In hard oriented samples, the density of dislocation networks is high and low angle subgrain boundaries are observed. The subgrain size in hard oriented crystals is strongly stress dependent.
In hard oriented crystals, (001) dislocations have no resolved shear stress for glide and must move by the slower process of climb; or by glide of (110) dislocations. The (001) dislocations are captured in networks, leading to a high total dislocation density in hard oriented samples compared to soft oriented crystals, whereas the dislocation density within the volume of subgrains is constant for all orientations.

The high temperature deformation properties of single crystals of stoichiometric NiAl have been studied in tension creep and in constant strain rate compression at temperatures between 850 and 1200°C. Samples were tested in a “soft”, [223], orientation and the “hard”, [001], orientation. The samples exhibit a strong orientation dependence of the strength and show other revealing deformation characteristics. The activation energy for steady state flow in both hard and soft orientations is near that for lattice self diffusion. Soft oriented crystals reach steady state rapidly and develop little dislocation substructure. Deformation of these soft oriented crystals occurs by the glide of b=<001> dislocations.
The creep curves of hard oriented crystals show pronounced sigmoidal creep, suggesting that the dislocations move in a sluggish manner, multiply in the early stages of creep and, ultimately, lead to strain hardening. Hard oriented crystals also develop extensive dislocation substructure during creep. This dislocation substructure is composed of b=<100> dislocations, which have no resolved shear stress for glide. Evidence for {101}<101> glide in hard oriented crystals is presented and a model is developed by which the decomposition of gliding b=<101> dislocations can produce the observed b=<100> dislocation networks. The increased creep resistance of hard oriented crystals compared to soft oriented crystals is described in terms of the differences in dislocation mobility and substructure formation for deformation in these directions.
