Summary
Introduction
Research over the last 25–30 years has revealed a considerable amount about the basic mechanisms of mammalian mastication (e.g., van Eijden and Turkawski, 2001; Türker, 2002). This progress has been largely due to the development of new experimental procedures and techniques. On the other hand, there has been relatively little emphasis on employing these procedures and techniques so as to facilitate adaptive explanations for the evolution of the mammalian masticatory apparatus (Herring, 1993). It has been our intent over the last several years to do just that (Ross and Hylander, 1996; Hylander et al., 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003; Ravosa et al., 2000; Vinyard et al., 2001, in press a; Wall et al., 2002; Williams et al., 2003). In recent years the functional morphology of the craniofacial region of primates and other mammals has attracted a significant amount of research interest (Weijs, 1994; Ross and Hylander, 1996, 2000; Spencer, 1998; Anapol and Herring, 2000; Daegling and Hylander, 2000; Dechow and Hylander, 2000; Herring and Teng, 2000; Hylander et al., 2000; Lieberman and Crompton, 2000; Ravosa et al., 2000). This is simply because there continue to be many unanswered research questions or problems. One persistent problem that has received a considerable amount of attention is related to the adaptive significance of symphyseal fusion in mammals. As noted by many, the ossification or fusion of the left and right sides of the lower jaw or dentaries has occurred independently in many different mammalian lineages (e.g., Beecher, 1977).

In this volume, experts from a range of disciplines use a variety of perspectives, notably those of public health, criminology, ecology, and developmental psychology, to review research on the causes of youth violence in the nation's schools and communities and on school-based interventions that have prevented or reduced it. They describe and evaluate strategies for the prevention and treatment of violence that go beyond punishment and incarceration. The volume offers a strategy for the problem of youth violence, arguing that the most effective interventions use a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach and take into account differences in stages of individual development and involvement in overlapping social contexts, families, peer groups, schools and neighborhoods. This book can be used profitably by school teachers and administrators, scholars, policy makers, and those who work with young people at risk, as well as by the general reader who is concerned with current social problems.

Summary
Introduction
Historically, our schools have been relatively safe havens from violence. However, over the past decade there has been an epidemic of youth crime. The violence on the streets and in some of our homes has spilled over into the schools. In recent years, the nation has been deeply shocked by several dramatic, incomprehensible multiple killings of students at school by their classmates. Fortunately such episodes are rare. However, on a daily basis many students, parents, and teachers are aware of threats or bullying and they experience pervasive anxiety about violence. Across the nation there is grave concern that our children are no longer as safe from intimidation, serious injury, or death as they once were while at school or on their way to or from school. This is the issue that we address in this book. Why has the level of youth violence escalated so steeply over the past decade? What are the impacts of this change on the priorities and functioning of the school; on teaching and on the learning and developmental outcomes for our children?
The societal response to this epidemic has been largely limited to increasingly harsh and lengthy sentencing with little evidence that this approach is deterring violence or rehabilitating young offenders. What is needed are new insights into the causes of this epidemic and new intervention strategies for making our schools safer places of learning. There are bodies of knowledge across diverse fields, not typically linked to criminology, that, taken together, have much to contribute to the understanding of these issues. They also point the way to implementing a range of integrated approaches for the prevention of the widespread youth crime and violence that have had such a disturbing ripple effect in our schools.
In this volume, new perspectives, methods, and data are presented from multiple scientific fields: social ecology, child and adolescent development, life course studies, criminology, and the field of public health. We believe these integrated approaches to the study of youth violence may be new to some readers. A brief description of each of these areas is given in the latter part of this chapter along with a guide to the location of chapters of the book in which each approach is more fully described and its contribution to the understanding of youth violence is explained.

Summary
Introduction
The objective of this concluding chapter is to summarize key findings and recommendations of the previous chapters in this volume. The summary is organized around identified themes that cut across chapters and flow from the general approach described in Chapter 1 - the ecological, life course, developmental perspective. The specifics of these chapters will not be reiterated; the reader should refer to individual chapters for detailed information. Rather, our summary is selective, noting findings and recommendations that illustrate the identified themes. This chapter closes with a summary of recommendations for youth violence prevention policy and practice, drawn from the chapters.
The previous chapters have presented different perspectives representing multiple academic disciplines and research traditions. The task now is to begin integrating these perspectives, often complementary, into a more comprehensive approach to understanding and preventing violence. We offer the ecological, life course, developmental approach as a framework for organizing the perspectives, research findings, and prevention recommendations of the previous chapters. For simplicity, this framework will be referred to subsequently as the ecological-developmental approach. We identify five themes related to the developmental approach and illustrated by the results reported in some, if not all, of the chapters of this volume.
Theme 1: The Interconnectedness of Family, Peer Group, School, and Neighborhood
The first theme bears on the ecological nature of the ecological-developmental approach. Recall that human development does not occur in isolation from other human beings. Instead, people live in social contexts that influence their developmental processes. For example, most Americans are connected to families of some sort living in neighborhoods situated within larger communities. Moreover, as children grow older, they become involved in increasingly larger social spheres of influence, ranging from family and friendship groups to schools, workplaces, and other social institutions within communities. The ecological nature of the developmental approach denotes more than just the interrelationships among individuals in social contexts. It also signifies the overlapping connections among these increasingly larger social spheres of influence. Hence, what goes on in the workplace can influence family relations, for example. These, in turn, can influence neighborhood dynamics and the conditions of school settings serving those neighborhoods.

A new technique using a focused ion beam has been developed for the fabrication of transmission electron microscopy specimens in pre-selected regions. The method has been proven in the fabrication of both cross-sectional and planar specimens, with no induced artefacts. The lateral accuracy achievable in the selection of an area for cross-sectional analysis is better than one micrometre. The technique has been applied to a number of silicon and III-V based integrated circuits, and is expected to be suitable for many other materials and structures.
