Summary
E-READING, AS JOHN THOMPSON has pointed out, is only the most public and visible aspect of a digital revolution that has transformed nearly every aspect of publishing. Evolving modes of distribution change what it means to write a short story for publication. If ‘publishing’ means making a short story available, the Internet makes this technically trivial. If ‘publishing’ is to make that story ‘real’, to make it legitimate and potentially influential, to earn for its author rewards – money, prestige, audience, credibility, and so on – then electronic publishing presents new opportunities without resolving old conflicts between pursuit of those rewards, most notably between wide readership and high status.
The digital age has not (at least not yet) ushered in a dramatic resurgence for the popularity of the short story form. The on-screen short story contends with an electronic publishing arena only beginning to pull away from print-based norms. It does have one advantage over the short story in print: it can appear in company, but does not have to. After a century and more of the dominance of the periodical and the bound collection (single-author and anthology), with only the rarest examples of stand-alone print publication, the digital short story can go out into the world on its own, unfettered as a pamphlet or ballad sheet, or allied to a greater range of non-textual material. For a short story to have its own distinct paratext is potentially revolutionary. But such an unfettered short story is forced, for the moment, to make its way in digital spaces occupied primarily by, and in many cases designed for, booklength works of prose. The accommodations required to reach readers – in pricing, in distribution and in paratextual packaging – mean that the solo story is often allied to larger series, books and brands. This lingering on the sidelines, however, has not proved a calamity: innovation is possible, as the component of the short story's identity most relevant to its digital future appears to be not brevity or non-commercial distribution or modernist values, but portability.
This chapter does not aspire to offer a comprehensive survey of a large and rapidly changing field, or even a list of key players.

Introduction: Over 2.6 million Hispanic/Latino construction workers (CWs) live in the US; 91% of South Florida CWs are Hispanic/Latino. CWs have higher smoking and lower cessation rates than other workers. Limited access to cessation services, worksite turnover, and lack of interventions tailored to culture/occupation hinder cessation. Partnering with worksite food trucks to deliver unique cessation interventions may improve these efforts.
Aims: To explore a novel cessation approach, assess worker/worksite acceptability, and seek input into intervention development.
Methods: In 2016, we conducted five semi-structured focus groups with 37 smoking Hispanic/Latino CWs. Constant comparative analysis was used to examine a priori themes regarding smoking behaviours, cessation treatments, intervention delivery, cultural adaptation, and quit interest.
Results: CWs reported tremendous job stress. Most smoking occurred during the workday and most CWs did not use nicotine replacement therapy with past quit attempts. Most CWs were open to a worksite face-to-face group cessation intervention before work (many underutilize breaks and feel pressure to keep working). CWs felt it unnecessary to tailor the intervention to Hispanics/Latinos indicating smokers are the same regardless of race/ethnicity.
Conclusions: Findings demonstrate the need to consider work environments, job demands/stress, and worker preferences when developing accessible and acceptable cessation interventions.

Background: While smoking rates in the United States have decreased, some population subgroups have smoking rates that exceed national and state averages. These higher rates often are associated with higher incidence rates of tobacco-associated cancers. Over time, a decrease in smoking rates leads to lower cancer incidence. Methods: Using spatial modelling techniques, we identified an underserved geographic locale in South Florida with higher than expected incidence rates of tobacco-associated cancers. We then used a community-based participatory research (CBPR) design to conduct focus groups in 2011 to elicit information about the acceptability of a smoking cessation intervention delivered by trained former smokers from within peer networks. Results: A variety of smoking cessation strategies was presented and discussed in separate, gender-stratified focus groups comprised of former and current smokers (n = 39). Focus group findings consistently indicated that support groups were the preferred cessation mechanism in this community. Based on this finding, we changed our initially proposed cessation approach to one which employed support groups as a quit method. Conclusions: Currently, we are collecting pilot data to test this intervention and to reach smokers who might not otherwise be directly targeted with cessation messaging from larger tobacco control initiatives. If successful, this strategy can be adapted to effect other important changes in health behaviours in at-risk populations.
