Summary
Even with the omission of any discussion of the eleventh-century inland salt-production centres of Worcestershire and Cheshire, a review of coastal production in the Norman period is a considerable exercise. It may be thought unnecessary: adequate summaries would appear to exist, notably in the three regional volumes of The Domesday Geography and in Professor Darby’s Domesday England. However, salt production may be understood more satisfactorily by using a broader chronological perspective and considering in more detail the uses to which salt was put. Within the constraints imposed on the Domesday Geography, the evidence for salt-working assembled in those volumes is confined almost entirely to an analysis of numbers of salinæ, and their renders, accompanied by distribution maps showing the numbers of salinæ recorded. Darby, in his concluding remarks for the volume on Eastern England, states
there is also clear evidence that some of the villages certainly had pans in the later Middle Ages, but we can only conjecture whether they were also there in the eleventh century. The other limitation from which the Domesday evidence suffers is that it tells us nothing about the way in which salt was made, nor does it give any hint of the customs associated with the industry. The concluding sentence of this section may well serve as the concluding sentence of the volume as a whole. In giving us something, the Domesday Book has withheld much.
In this review an attempt will be made to expand the evidence published so far and provide what information there may be for the details omitted from the Domesday Book.
It is necessary, first of all, to establish to what uses salt was put in the mediaeval period. In Ælfric’s Colloquy the importance of salt is neatly summarised and refers to salt as flavouring food and that, without it, butter and cheese would perish. One may assume that butter- and cheese-making techniques change little: Bridbury records that on one of the bishop of Winchester’s estates in 1305 one pound of salt was needed for the production of every ten pounds of butter or cheese.

Summary
The area of this study, the English upands and the Northumbrian coastal plain, has a border society with its own peculiarities, so ably studied recently by Philip Dixon,’ an area where, in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries ‘men have doubted whether thieves or true men do most abound. The area in the later medieval period stands apart from the rest of Qle country, perhaps more so than the Welsh Marches. But for earlier periods, when it was just as sparsely populated, the area should be examined to understand the events of the twelfth century.
Professor Barrow has shown in his 1966 study of the Anglo-Scottish border, how before the treaty of York in 1237 there was never ‘a sizeable tract of territory (as distinct from small pieces of no man's or debatable land) where the English and Scottish kingdoms as it were shaded off into each other': the line of the border on the west was determined by Solway and Esk, and on the east by the river Tweed. Before the decline of Northumbria, however, the region between the rivers Tyne and Forth fonned a culttiral, and frequentIy, a political unity. In the seventh and eighth centuries the natural border zone, where the rivers Carron and Avon entered the Forth, formed the frontier with the Celtic world. This is well demonstated by the location of such Anglian monasteries as Tynningehanl and Coldingham, and particularly by the earliest estates of Lindisfarne. Barrow has shown how the border could have meant very little, when in 655, Lindisfarne was given twelve estates by King Oswy. The estates along the upper Bowmont Water included two now in England (Mindrum and Shotton) and seven now in Scotland (Sourhope, Halterburn, Ciifton, Shereburgh, Staerough and Yetholm).
The main impetus of Scandinavian invasion, combined with the failing of Northumbria, occurred at the time when the Scoto-Pictish kingdom, north of the river Forth, managed to maintain its independence and integrity despite Norwegian and Danish onslaughts. Once Scandinavian invasion and settlement diminished, it was clear that sooner or later Saxon expansion northwards would coincide with the movement of Scots southwards. The river Tweed seems now to assume importance: this is well demonstrated in the History of saint Cutlhbert, in which Lindisfarnensis terra is said to extend ‘from Tweed to Warenmouth'.

This is the first report by C.B.A. Group IV (Yorkshire) on the petrological identification of stone axes since 1962 when the group undertook to help members, in part financially and in part with organisation, to obtain sections and petrological identifications of implements in their possession. Some of the sectioned artifacts are in the possession of individual members but the bulk belongs to public museum collections.
The programme was initiated by Mr D. P. Dymond, a former group secretary, and since 1964 has been continued by Mr Laurence Keen. A considerable quantity of axes remains to be sectioned. The rate of sectioning at present is about one hundred and twenty a year. Attempts by the writers to increase the rate of sectioning have been unsuccessful because it has proved impossible to interest capable technicians in the project. However, grateful acknowledgment must be made here to Mr E. D. Evens who has willingly arranged for the sectioning of virtually all the axes in the following Register. The majority of thin sections was made by Mr E. W. Seavill. The writers would also like to thank Dr F. S. Wallis, who has also kindly checked the geological part of this report, Dr D. W. Humphries, Professor W. F. Grimes, Mr J. Bartlett who has kindly made available for publication material in his keeping, Mr H. Coope, and Dr K. C. Dunham, who have made the petrological identifications.
