Background
Little is known about the reasons for suicidal behaviour in Africa, and communities’ perception of suicide prevention. A contextualised understanding of these reasons is important in guiding the implementation of potential suicide prevention interventions in specific settings.
AimsTo understand ideas, experiences and opinions on reasons contributing to suicidal behaviour in the Coast region of Kenya, and provide recommendations for suicide prevention.
MethodWe conducted a qualitative study with various groups of key informants residing in the Coast region of Kenya, using in-depth interviews. Audio-recorded interviews were transcribed and translated from the local language before thematic inductive content analysis.
ResultsFrom the 25 in-depth interviews, we identified four key themes as reasons given for suicidal behaviour: interpersonal and relationship problems, financial and economic difficulties, mental health conditions and religious and cultural influences. These reasons were observed to be interrelated with each other and well-aligned to the suggested recommendations for suicide prevention. We found six key recommendations from our thematic content analysis: (a) increasing access to counselling and social support, (b) improving mental health awareness and skills training, (c) restriction of suicide means, (d) decriminalisation of suicide, (e) economic and education empowerment and (f) encouraging religion and spirituality.
ConclusionsThe reasons for suicidal behaviour are comparable with high-income countries, but suggested prevention strategies are more contextualised to our setting. A multifaceted approach in preventing suicide in (coastal) Kenya is warranted based on the varied reasons suggested. Community-based interventions will likely improve and increase access to suicide prevention in this study area.

This paper describes the current status of knowledge regarding the impact of aviation on the atmosphere. The growth of the aviation industry is likely to continue in the future and at present there are significant concerns that this will adversely affect climate and local air quality in the vicinity of airports. Indeed, it is possible that air quality may become a constraint to increased capacity of some large hub airports. Currently the radiative forcing impact from aircraft emissions, other than CO2, are not accounted for in the International Civil Aviation Organization emission trading scheme proposals. Taking only this approach, emissions trading could, in theory, increase the radiative forcing, rather than decrease it. The study of improved ‘environmentally friendly’ flight is still in its infancy, however any proposed and actual new developments, in terms of technology and operational practice, should include an environmental assessment.

The neurofibromatoses consist of at least two distinct autosomal dominant hereditary disorders. Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is due to a lesion on chromosome 17q. Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is caused by a defect on chromosome 22q. The hallmark of NF2 is the development, in the second and third decades, of bilateral acoustic neuromas. NF1 is characterized by the appearance of cafe-au-lait spots and neurofibromas in addition to iris hamartomas, or Lisch nodules, of the eye, during the first and second decades.
Ten families were personally studied. A total of 16 members were found to be affected with NF2. A protocol for evaluation and review of subjects and relatives of NF2 families is proposed. A team approach, coordinating the expertise of multiple specialties is recommended.

The president calls attention to the large and increasing membership of Commission 12 and the policy of concentrating in it all matters relating to the sun. The result makes it comparable in breadth of field and in membership to the former Union for Co-operation in Solar Research. The main point in favour of this policy is the increased interest in the meetings of the Commission and the larger number of individuals reached compared with the meetings of small committees. One recalls the general sessions of the Solar Union in which each one present felt himself a part of the Union and in real touch with the work of different sections and after the discussions went away with fuller knowledge of what it was all about. This was a valuable result not attained to the same degree from the general sessions of the present Union, but in a measure it does follow from the meetings of the Solar Physics Committee. On the other hand the question may be raised whether or not the merging of independent commissions into subdivisions of a large commission lessens their interest to an extent not balanced by the advantages. If the present policy holds, it seems to the president that a re-organisation of Commission 12 is advisable by which more responsibility is laid upon the directors of centres. The basis of membership in the Commission may well be considered and recommendations formulated for transmission to the Executive Committee.
