The adsorption of Rhodamine 6G in aqueous suspension on Laponite B was investigated by electronic absorption and emission spectroscopies. Fluorescence spectra suggest that the monomer is adsorbed at two different surfaces, the external and the internal. A monomer is intercalated in the interlamellar space at low loading of dye (<3% CEC), whereas the monomeric state of the dye seems to be at the solid-aqueous interface in suspensions with high loading (>12% CEC). The metachromatic effect observed in the absorption spectra, for the loading interval between 1% and 15% CEC of Laponite B, is attributed to the dimerization of the dye, which seems, from X-ray diffraction measurements, to be formed at the clay interlayer. The formation constant and the absorption spectrum of the aggregate were obtained and the dimer was structurally characterized by applying the Exciton Theory. The observed fluorescence quenching for loadings lower than 15% CEC is attributed to energy transfer from monomer to the dimer, which obeys the Perrin model.

Absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies were applied to study the adsorption of rhodamine 6G on several smectite-type clays in aqueous suspension. The dye can be adsorbed as the monomeric and the dimeric forms on both the external and the interlamellar surfaces of the clay. The presence of these species and their evolution with the stirring time of the sample and the relative dye/clay concentration depend on the nature of the smectite, the clay concentration and the particle size, factors that also affect the dispersion degree of the clay particles in water.

Giant foxtail, woolly cupgrass, and wild-proso millet infest millions of hectares of land devoted to corn production in the midwestern U.S. Control of these species and effects on corn grain yield were evaluated at various timings using POST applications of nicosulfuron vs. applications of various PRE herbicides at 17 locations across the midwestern U.S. in 1992 and 1993. Nicosulfuron applied to 5 to 10 cm giant foxtail and woolly cupgrass provided greater control than that observed with selected PRE herbicides. Giant foxtail control with nicosulfuron averaged 88%, and control of woolly cupgrass averaged 77% across all sites. Nicosulfuron, applied to 5 to 10 cm wild-proso millet, provided a level of control similar to that of selected PRE herbicides. Corn grain yield was greater when giant foxtail was controlled POST with nicosulfuron vs. PRE control with selected soil-applied herbicides. Corn grain yields were similar when nicosulfuron was applied POST to 5 to 10 cm woolly cupgrass or wild-proso millet vs. PRE control of these grass weeds. Across a broad range of geographical locations, nicosulfuron, applied POST to 5 to 10 cm tall grass, provided greater or similar levels of weed control vs. the selected PRE herbicides, with no deleterious effect on grain yield.

We perform a sample of N-body simulations of a minor merger between a Milky Way type galaxy and a satellite, which is density scaled version of the primary galaxy. In this suite of collisionless runs we change the value of some critical parameters like the luminous mass ratio between the two galaxies (1 : 6, 1 : 9), the type of orbit (direct or prograde) and the number of particles (185,000, 555,000 and 1,850,000). We estimate the disc thickening by measuring the median of the vertical scale and we find that that the merger increases the scale height in a factor of ≈2 in all the remnants.

NGC 3603, one of the most massive H II regions in our galaxy, shows recent star forming activity (Frogel et al. 1977; Tapia 1981; Persi et al., 1985). In this paper we report new near-infrared maps and photometric observations in the complex region surrounding Irs 9, Irs 2 and Irs 8. Most data were gathered at the 1.5-m telescope of CTIO, using an InSb photometer. Tables 1 and 2 synthesize the observations and the results of the photometry. While the low resolution K map (Figure 1) shows basically the previously reported features, the high resolution K and L maps (shown superimposed in Figure 2), show that Irs 9 is the brightest source in the field, clearly resolved from Irs 2 and Irs 8. The presence of a previously unreported source some 22″N and 5″W of Irs 2, should be further investigated. The spectral distributions derived from our measurements and from previous ones by Persi et al. (1985) strongly suggest that the 10 and 20 μm fluxes reported by Frogel et al. (1977) at the position of Irs 2, probably correspond to Irs 9. Under this assumption, Irs 9 is probably a highly reddened massive star (1 μm to 20 μm luminosity, L∗ = 2.2 × 104 L⊙) while the luminosity of Irs 2 is less than 102 L⊙. We therefore conclude that Irs 9 is a young massive star surrounded by a warm (Tdust ∼ 250 K) dust envelope; Irs 2 seems to be the less obscured part of an associated H II region, as further corroborated by the Brγ emission and the free-free like spectrum and spectral distribution, as reported by Persi et al. (1985) and in this paper.
