Capitulations, Boabdil and the Catholic Kings, 25 November 1491
The religious and cultural tolerance that the conquering Catholic monarchs promised their Islamic subjects ‘forever and ever’ in the 1491 Capitulations lasted but a decade, as Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros's policy of forced conversions replaced the patient evangelization efforts of Granada's first archbishop, Hernando de Talavera, at the turn of the century. The downward spiral into what Francisco Márquez Villanueva characterizes as religious persecution and cultural genocide stretching over more than a century is a tragedy of Spain's history both too complex and too well known to merit repetition in one more essay. My concern herein is with the question of how the trauma of that historical tragedy was negotiated in the dramatic tragedy Pedro Calderón de la Barca wrote on the 1568–70 rebellion of the moriscos, brutally put down by troops commanded by Don Juan de Austria. Events of the twenty-first century have propelled us to a point in time and space that invites us to salvage from the wreckage piled at the feet ofWalter Benjamin's angel of history a baroque pearl, Calderón's puzzling drama, El Tuzaní de la Alpujarra. This work (its title in the 1682 Vera Tassis edition is Amar después de la muerte) has long intrigued me. Why would Calderón – famous for his service to the Catholic faith in his autos sacramentales long before he was ordained a priest in 1651 – write a work that from its first lines conveys much sympathy for a rebellious Granadine morisco population, decades after their final expulsion from Spain between 1609 and 1614?

The principal phyto-oestrogens (PO) in food are isoflavones, lignans, coumestans and prenylated flavonoids, with isoflavones and lignans being the most commonly found in UK diets. Until recently obtaining accurate data on the PO content of foods was hampered by lack of suitable analytical methods and validation techniques. Furthermore, although PO data exist for some foods, these foods may not be available in the UK. The aim of the present study was to construct a new, comprehensive isoflavone (total genistein + daidzein) database. Using data, mainly from recent GC–MS analysis, for approximately 300 foods available in the UK, and extensive recipe calculations, a new database was constructed containing approximately 6000 foods allocated an isoflavone value. By analysing 7d weighed food diaries, the database was subsequently used to estimate isoflavone intake in two groups of healthy volunteers, omnivores (n 9) and vegetarians (n 10). Mean isoflavone intake in the vegetarian and omnivorous group was 7·4 (sem 3·05) and 1·2 (sem 0·43) mg/d, respectively. Mean intake for the total group was 4·5 (sem 1·89) mg/d. Main food sources of isoflavones for the vegetarian group were soya milk (plain), meat-substitute foods containing textured vegetable protein and soya protein isolate, soya mince, wholemeal bread and rolls, white bread and rolls, croissants and pitta breads, beans, raisins and soya sauce. Main food sources of isoflavones for the omnivorous group were soya yogurts, wholemeal bread and rolls, white bread and rolls, garlic bread, nan bread and brown bread, sultanas and scones.

Summary The Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland millimeter array has been used to image the CO (J=1−0) emission of three Seyfert galaxies, NGC 3227, NGC 7469 and NGC 5033, selected for their strong single-dish CO detections. Extensive u-v coverage was obtained for all three galaxies resulting in 2″-3″resolution. The CO emission in NGC 3227 and NGC 7469 appears as compact structures centered on the active nuclei, containing substantial fractions (∼ 80% and ∼ 50%) of the single-dish flux. In NGC 3227, 10% of the CO flux detected by the interferometer is contained within the ionized narrow line region. The unresolved molecular gas concentrations in the nucleus of NGC 3227 imply a CO mass of 6.5 × 107 M⊙ concentrated within a diameter ≍ 50 pc. The CO emission in NGC 5033 is not detected at this resolution, implying a CO structure size of 20″-60″(1.2-3.6 kpc). Continuum emission at 2.7mm is not detected in any of the three galaxies. In the center of NGC 7469, the H2 mass is comparable to the dynamical mass. Kinematic studies of the detected gas reveal a rotational motion of the gas in NGC 3227 and NGC 7469, allowing identification of the gas in NGC 7469 with a nuclear starburst. These data are consistent with the idea that interactions between galaxies cause gas to concentrate in their nuclei thereby feeding starburst and Seyfert activity.

The court spectacle plays of Calderón de la Barca, when viewed within their historical, physical, and dramatic context, reveal a polysemous structure of meaning that both supports and criticizes the ruling monarch. The first of these, El mayor encanto amor, reproves Philip iv's pursuit of sensual pleasures in time of war and his surrender of power to his prime minister; the last, Hado y divisa de Leonido y Marfisa, attempts to forge a credibly regal image of the weak Charles ii. These plays dramatize the belief that the polyphonic richness of theatrical representation can not only serve and guide the king but also generate his authority, that the proper constitution of the central figure in the theater of power may depend on the power of theater.
