The Hexateuchal narrative arc begins with Abram’s encounter with Yhwh in Shechem in Gen 12:6–7 and ends with Joshua’s covenant at the same place in Josh 24:25–26. These “bookends” make mention of a particular tree in Shechem, which also features in Gen 35:1–4. The inherited Priestly tradition claimed that none of the ancestors in Genesis knew the name Yhwh, but the Hexateuchal editors of the Persian period insist that both El and Yhwh were known in Shechem and Bethel. In effect, these editors defend northern Yahwism against its southern detractors, and resist any supersessionist proposal that would turn the ancestral memories of the Samarian province into mere history. Israel was born in the house of El, and the ancestors of Israel, who came from beyond the riverine borders of the Euphrates and the Nile, had no clear understanding of Yhwh until they set foot in Canaanite country.

Summary
The book of Joshua presents a multitude of ethical quandaries, both ancient and modern. After identifying some of the key questions about the text and its composition, our discussion will trace the distinctive kinds of influence that this book has exercised in a number of Jewish and Christian traditions. All of these elements will then figure in concluding reflections on how the book of Joshua may, and may not, help us to reflect on the legacies of imperialism and colonialism.

Background/Aims:
Registry-based trials have emerged as a potentially cost-saving study methodology. Early estimates of cost savings, however, conflated the benefits associated with registry utilisation and those associated with other aspects of pragmatic trial designs, which might not all be as broadly applicable. In this study, we sought to build a practical tool that investigators could use across disciplines to estimate the ranges of potential cost differences associated with implementing registry-based trials versus standard clinical trials.
Methods:We built simulation Markov models to compare unique costs associated with data acquisition, cleaning, and linkage under a registry-based trial design versus a standard clinical trial. We conducted one-way, two-way, and probabilistic sensitivity analyses, varying study characteristics over broad ranges, to determine thresholds at which investigators might optimally select each trial design.
Results:Registry-based trials were more cost effective than standard clinical trials 98.6% of the time. Data-related cost savings ranged from $4300 to $600,000 with variation in study characteristics. Cost differences were most reactive to the number of patients in a study, the number of data elements per patient available in a registry, and the speed with which research coordinators could manually abstract data. Registry incorporation resulted in cost savings when as few as 3768 independent data elements were available and when manual data abstraction took as little as 3.4 seconds per data field.
Conclusions:Registries offer important resources for investigators. When available, their broad incorporation may help the scientific community reduce the costs of clinical investigation. We offer here a practical tool for investigators to assess potential costs savings.

Summary
Introduction
Over the past decade, Jürgen Habermas has provoked a conversation about some fundamental questions in public discourse. In the wake of numerous terrorist incidents, he has interrogated the polarisation of worldviews that splits societies into religious and secular camps. Habermas identified the need for a ‘postsecular’ discourse within which religious and secular contributions can learn from each other, and forge the solidarities that are necessary if violence is to be avoided. Although he suggested that fundamentalism in some parts of the world may reflect ‘failures in decolonization’ (Habermas, 2006, p 1), he has confessed in another context that his own proposals may not be readily applicable in settler colonial contexts. He seems to suggest that Indigenous cultures might need to be considered ‘external to egalitarian law’ in Western societies like the US, Canada and Australia (Habermas, 2008, pp 304- 5). This chapter investigates some of the ‘failures in decolonisation’ in Australia, and also considers new opportunities that may be enabled by postsecular discourse. I argue that a political ethic of reconciliation focused on restorative justice can be informed by a variety of religious traditions, and that such a political ethic can address the gaps created by utilitarian policies.
Along with Habermas, we may acknowledge at the outset that there is no easy way to integrate Indigenous cultures within democratic systems of government. The utilitarian norms that embrace the wellbeing of the majority, and which commonly underpin democratic arrangements, are manifestly inadequate when it comes to the protection of minority interests. Similarly, policies designed to address social disadvantage rarely stretch far enough into the past to address the historic injustices committed against Aboriginal peoples in settler colonial contexts. Notions of distributive justice (Fleischacker, 2004) have been largely insensitive to the imposition of settler sovereignty and the extinguishment of customary rights to land and natural resources. We confront an additional layer of policy complexity when the core issues at stake lie precisely at the intersections of Indigenous spirituality and the management of natural resources.
Postsecular repentance?
The postsecular experiment in political philosophy can be interpreted as a self-critical move on the part of liberal theorists who acknowledge that some recent versions of secular politics have had the effect of limiting freedom of religion, with unintended consequences.

Np-doped Synroc was subjected to modified MCC-1 leach tests in demineralised water at 70°C. Normalised total differential Np leach rates were about 10−4 g m−2 d−1 initially, decreased to about 10−5 g m−2 d−1 after 60 days and stayed approximately constant for periods totalling up to 2283 d. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and analytical transmission electron microscope (AEM) examination of discs leached for periods totalling 56 d or longer showed that they were covered with crystalline anatase, brookite and ilmenite. The crystalline secondary phases initially nucleated in polishing scratches and on perovskite grains. However, after leaching for a total of 422 d most of the surface was covered. None of the secondary phases contained observable amounts of Np (< 0.2 wt%). These data are discussed in relation to previous work.

This book suggests that Old Testament scholars should strengthen their growing links with neighbouring academic disciplines and encourage a number of interpretative interests within biblical studies. Given such a pluralistic context, the author's contention is that the 'canonical' approach to Old Testament study will have a distinctive contribution to make to the discipline without necessarily displacing other traditions of historical and literary inquiry, as many scholars have assumed. Dr Brett offers a comprehensive critique of the canonical approach as developed by Brevard Childs, and examines the development of Childs's exegetical practice, his hermeneutical theory, and the many critical responses which his work has elicited. In responding to these criticisms, the author examines the most problematic aspects of the canonical approach (notably Childs's inadequate reply to those who emphasize the ideological conflicts that lie behind biblical texts in their final form) and seeks to reconstruct the approach in light of contemporary discussions of interpretation in literary theory and the social sciences.

THEORY AND PRACTICE
I have so far characterized the canonical approach in the following terms: it may be understood as a new type of interpretative interest (most closely related to, but distinguishable from, emic description) which, for theological reasons, seeks to interpret biblical texts in their final form. In reaching this formulation I have drawn from the work of Childs in a highly selective way, and this ad hoc method of reconstruction finds its justification in the fact that Childs himself has failed to provide a coherent exegetical theory. That is to say, he has not yet provided a sufficiently clear and explicit discussion of the interpretative interests and concepts that shape the canonical approach. This lack of coherent theory has turned out to be one of the major obstacles to a balanced appreciation of his work. Nevertheless, a reconstruction of the canonical approach cannot be undertaken simply on the theoretical level; it also requires a patient account of Childs's actual exegetical practice. To rephrase a famous philosophical attack on metaphysics: practice without theory is blind, theory without practice is empty.
Discussions of Childs have tended to focus on his publications since Biblical Theology in Crisis (1970). It would certainly be a mistake to assume that, given a sufficiently sensitive reader, an author's work (in this case extending over thirty years) can always be knitted together into a seamless whole. Nevertheless, I would suggest that there are certain elements in Childs's work which have been present ever since his early studies on myth, published in 1960.

THE DISCIPLINE OF INTRODUCTIONS
Five years after the appearance of the Exodus commentary, Childs published his influential Introduction to the Old Testament as Scripture (1979). His unpublished Sprunt Lectures of 1972, which had emphasized final form studies for the first time, were also reworked into this text (1979: 17). The first issue to be considered is whether, as some have suggested, the Introduction reflects any changes in the canonical approach. Second, I will describe the distinctive features of a canonical ‘introduction’ as opposed to earlier scholarly works in this genre. Third, we shall investigate the relationship between Childs's Old Testament Theology in a Canonical Context (1985) and his previous publications.
Changes in the canonical approach
Up until the appearance of the Introduction Childs had consistently stressed that consideration of the New Testament was an essential part of his approach. Yet, as James Barr has correctly pointed out, there is comparatively little talk of the New Testament in the Introduction: ‘the Old Testament has not been interpreted as Christian scripture after all’. Childs's response to this observation was thin. He protested that he ‘was not writing a biblical theology but an introduction to the Hebrew Scriptures … the larger task clearly needs to be done’ (1984b: 70; cf. 1979: 72). He had, however, already written in his Exodus commentary that the sections on ‘New Testament context’ and ‘theological reflection within the context of the Christian canon’ belonged to ‘the heart’ of the commentary (1974a: xvi). Barr had good grounds to think that New Testament study was an indispensable part of the canonical approach.

GHILDS VERSUS GOTTWALD
The first problem with the canonical approach is its totalitarian tendency; Childs has sometimes argued as if everyone should become interpreters after his own image. At other times he envisions a more pluralist situation for biblical studies. The argument of this chapter is that the second Childs is to be preferred. Our discipline now includes a whole range of interpretative interests which are logically distinct, and it is indeed questionable whether biblical studies should be thought of as a single discipline at all. Some might feel that this diversity of interests amounts to a crisis in biblical studies that will resolve itself in one direction or another. But it seems more likely that our different interpretative goals will turn out to be permanently incommensurable. It is clear, however, that a number of our current methodological disputes are confused by a failure to recognize our plurality, and this especially applies to the work of Childs. First, he has attacked some positions which he need not have, and second, he has tried to include too many different tasks under the label of the canonical approach.
As an example of a confused attack, consider his recent comments on materialist approaches to the Hebrew Bible – those which place biblical texts against a reconstructed background of environment, technology, economy, and sociology. Childs argues, for example, that the work of Norman Gottwald ‘destroys the need for closely hearing the text on its verbal level’ (1985: 25). Gottwald has responded, almost predictably, by saying that Childs fails to account for the sociological matrices within which all texts are shaped.
