Influence of particle size on the paramagnetic components of kaolins from different origins

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of different particle size fractions of four kaolins from diverse sources in North America, Europe and Asia have been investigated in order to characterize their paramagnetic properties and heterogeneity. There were major differences in the sources of the EPR signals from transition metals; V and Mn were structural, Fe was both structural and as associated oxides, and Cu was in the form of an adsorbed ion. The radiation-induced free radical signals commonly known as the A- and B-centres were observed in three of the deposits; however, in addition to the previously reported 27Al hyperfine structure associated with the B-centre, we also observed much smaller 27Al hyperfine structure on the g┴ feature of the A-centre. The other kaolin sample produced four free radical signals that have not previously been reported in kaolins. Each had substantial 1H hyperfine splitting; three are interpreted as corresponding to defect centres associated with Si-OH groups, and the other to a Si hole surrounded by protonated O atoms. The EPR spectra changed progressively with particle size, and measurements on the Asian specimens after grinding showed major differences in the Fe3+ signals from the same particle size fractions separated from the natural samples, thus supporting previous reports that grinding results in major structural changes in the minerals.

Various physical and analytical techniques (XRD, XRF, SEM, FTIR and EPR) have been used to investigate the effects of chemical and/or physical modification of Ranong kaolin, which has been proposed as a potential bleaching clay for vegetable oils. Acid treatment after grinding resulted in major changes compared with acid treatment of the original mineral sample or mechanical treatment alone. Previous work has shown that the combined treatments produce increases in surface area and new porous structures, and the present measurements show reductions in Al:Si ratios. These are accompanied by a major reduction in O–H stretching vibrations as a result of grinding, although acid treatment produced little subsequent effect on the O–H bands in the FTIR spectra. However, acid treatment resulted in a reduction in the Al–OH–Al bending vibrations and the appearance of Si–O bands associated with newly synthesized material; these effects were much greater with samples that had been ground prior to the acid treatment. There were appreciable qualitative differences in the way in which the EPR spectra of Fe and Mn were affected; the Fe signal was sensitive to mechanical treatment, but little subsequent change was induced by acid extraction, whereas the Mn peaks were sensitive to the both the pH and the chemical nature of the acid used. These results therefore indicate that the Fe and Mn are in different types of site in the kaolin structure. Little change was observed in the main oxygen-based free radical centre associated with Si atoms, but that associated with Al was lost as a result of the treatments. Such mineral characterization is of fundamental importance to understanding the modification of kaolins and their uses as adsorbents in the food and environmental sciences.

Background: Non-invasive measurement of left ventricular output has been shown to be a repeatable technique. Little is known about the repeatability using echocardiography in determining pulmonary arterial diameters or right ventricular output. Aims: To find the most repeatable point at which to measure pulmonary arterial diameter, and to compare the repeatability of determining right ventricular output with left ventricular output. Methods: We assessed the Intra-observer and inter-observer repeatability for measuring the diameter of the pulmonary trunk in 24 term and 26 preterm infants, respectively. Interobserver repeatability was assessed for the diameters of the pulmonary trunk and aorta, for stroke distance, and for left and right ventricular output. Results: The coefficients of variation for intra-observer repeatability were 4%, 7.5% and 9% respectively for measurements of the pulmonary valve, the pulmonary trunk, and the right ventricular outflow tract. There were significant differences between observers for measurement of the pulmonary trunk (p< 0.001) and right ventricular outflow tract (p= 0.011) but not for the pulmonary valve measured in either its long (p= 0.22) or short axis (p= 0.22). Significant differences between observers were also found for the pulmonary stroke distance measured in the long axis (p= 0.004) and aortic diameter at end-diastole (p< 0.001). The other parameters did not differ significantly and were used to calculate right and left ventricular output, respectively. Mean left ventricular output was 241 mls/kg/min, with mean differences between observers of 0.6 mls/kg/min (95% confidence interval (CI): −39.2 to 40.3 mls/kg/min). Mean right ventricular output was 255 mls/kg/min, with mean differences of 0.3 mls/kg/min (95% CI: −24.1 to 23.4 mls/kg/min). Conclusion: Measuring the diameter of the pulmonary trunk at the base of the valvar hinge points was most repeatable. Repeatability of right ventricular output was similar to that of left, with absolute values similar to those published by other workers.

Changes of the in vitro morphogenetic state may be achieved for some potato genotypes, but others are unresponsive (recalcitrant). Although the biochemical basis for somatic recalcitrance is unknown, evidence suggests that two different aspects of oxidative stress may be involved. Phenolic oxidation is a major problem in manipulating cultures of woody plant species (Thorpe & Harry 1990) and lipid peroxidation has been associated with recalcitrance in monocotyledonous plants (Cutler et al. 1989; Benson et al. 1992). Both oxidative phenomena are believed to be free-radical mediated, but to date there is no reported direct evidence for the formation of free radicals during plant tissue culture callogenesis. The objectives of the present study were twofold; to assess the feasibility of using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy to detect free radicals directly in plant tissue cultures and to investigate free radical activity during dedifferentiation of responsive and unresponsive potato genotypes.
The chemical fate of the endogenous plant antioxidants carvacrol and thymol during oxidative stress

The major antioxidants present in the essential (volatile) oils of oregano (Origanum vulgare, L.), summer savory (Satureja hortensis, L.) and thyme (Thymus vulgaris, L.) have been identified as carvacrol and thymol which have both been demonstrated to possess fungicidal and bactericidal properties. EPR spectra produced upon oxidation are inconsistent with the expected phenoxy free radicals (RO), but resemble those of galvinoxyl and anthronyl radicals. The EPR spectrum, in the case of carvacrol, is a pair of quintets with isotropic splittings, 0.325 and 0.080 millitesla (mT). ENDOR and TRIPLE resonance experiments have been performed and are indicative of the paramagnetic species being a substituted anthronyl. Further studies are being conducted to characterise these species and to investigate their potential roles during oxidative stress.

The induction of plant defence mechanisms has been extensively studied in recent years and there appear to be three interdependent roles for free radicals in the host response (Sutherland 1991) viz; oxidation of specific host components, which may include lipid peroxidation (Rogers et al. 1988) and cell wall lignification (Bolwell et al. 1985), direct injury to the pathogen, and signal transduction upon infection. A potential messenger role has been proposed for the short-lived hydroxyl radical, HO˙ (Epperlein et al. 1986) and the superoxide radical anion, O2−˙ (Doke 1983; Doke et al. 1991).
The present study has utilised EPR spectroscopy and spin trapping with α-(4-pyridyl l-oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone (POBN) to investigate the free radical chemistry of soybean cotyledons during incompatible infection, abiotic elicitation and wounding.

This paper discusses four aspects of fabrication of an active address liquid crystal array from laser recrystallized polycrystalline silicon: recrystallization, processing, device performance and array fabrication. The recrystallization process produces material which is imperfect by silicon wafer standards, but which contains few incoherent defects. The material was used to fabricate discrete n-channel MOS devices which had consistent off currents of 10−11 amps (0.4pA/μm of channel width) and on currents of 10−4 amps. Device threshold is controlled to + 200 mV and channel mobility is 500 to 600 cm2 /V-sec. The crossovers between Al/1% Si source and degenerately doped polycrystalline silicon gate lines were fabricated by use of high temperature reflowed, phosphorus doped chemical vapor deposited SiO2. Completed arrays had very few defects (no crossover defects and 0.3% bad devices).
