Flavomycin is an antibiotic that promotes growth in ruminant and non-ruminant livestock. The aim of this study was to determine the mechanism of action of flavomycin in sheep by measuring microbial numbers, microbial metabolism and gut tissue protein turnover at different sites in the digestive tract. Two weight-matched groups (n 5) of male castrate lambs (30 kg) received 800 g grass cubes/d for 6 weeks, with one group receiving 20 mg/d flavomycin during the last 2 weeks. Samples of digesta and gut tissue segments were obtained immediately post mortem, 90 min after a flood-dose of [ring-D5]phenylalanine. Viable bacterial counts and volatile fatty acid concentrations were highest in ruminal digesta, followed by the colon and caecum, then the duodenum and ileum. The only effect of flavomycin was an increased bacterial count in the rumen (3·5 v. 1·2×109 per g; P=0·04). Acetate was proportionally greater and propionate and butyrate were lower in the caecum and colon than the rumen. Flavomycin had no effect on volatile fatty acid proportions or ammonia concentrations. Bacteria growing on peptides as sole C source were not affected by flavomycin. Proteolytic, peptidolytic and amino acid deamination activities were similar in the rumen, caecum and colon; they tended to be lower in animals receiving flavomycin. Protein turnover in ruminal wall and duodenal tissues, measured by a flood-dose technique, decreased with flavomycin (P=0·075 and 0·027, respectively). Thus, flavomycin differs from ionophores in its mode of action. It may influence protein metabolism of both digesta and tissue throughout the ruminant digestive tract.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
Rolnick, Smith, and Weber describe features of the monetary system in the United States prior to the Civil War and, hence, prior to the establishment of the national banking system in 1863. They focus on the systems in place for the issue of bank notes. Some banks were state-chartered banks, and some, the First and Second Banks of the United States, were federally chartered. The authors devote most of their paper to contrasting the operations of the Suffolk Banking System in New England with those of the Second Bank. They take as given that the goal was a nationwide system in which bank notes were uniform in two senses: Notes issued by different banks were perfect substitutes, and such notes were valued at par, meaning that notes did not trade at a discount or at a premium relative to their stated denomination in units of account. In their view, Suffolk approximated such uniformity in New England, but the activities of the Second Bank did not do so for the country as a whole.
I will set out a model that can be used to consider whether and in what sense such uniformity is good. There are at least two reasons for doing so. First, uniformity in the above sense is not an ultimate goal. Therefore, we are left with two options: We can rely on data and natural experiments to judge whether uniformity is good in terms of ultimate goals such as consumption, or we can use a model within which the uniformity experiments can be performed. The modeling alternative is easier and cheaper.

Gliomatosis cerebri is the unifying term used when diffuse glial infiltration occurs throughout the cerebral hemispheres. The very few cases reported in children have presented with intractable epilepsy, corticospinal tract deficits, unilateral tremor, headaches, and developmental delay. Antemortem diagnosis is difficult because of the vagueness of the physical, radiological and pathological findings. Adult cases may simulate an acute diffuse encephalomyelitis and show postmortem evidence of a marked swelling of the spinal cord. Apparently benign intracranial hypertension with papilloedema has also been recorded. We report a 10-year-old girl who presented with a history and physical signs suggestive of benign intracranial hypertension. A diffuse encephalomyelopathy occurred, which was complicated by spinal cord swelling, followed by deterioration and death. Gliomatosis cerebri affecting the brain and spinal cord was found at postmortem examination.

Summary
In this paper, I discuss two policy questions which I regard as unresolved: Should interest be paid on money and should currency provision be in the hands of the government? An affirmative answer to the first question stands as one of the few widely accepted general results of monetary theory. My discussion is intended to cast doubt on it. There is no widely accepted answer to the second question; some have asserted that currency provision is a public good while others have asserted that currency provision should be left to the market. My discussion of currency provision will not provide a resolution. Instead, I will discuss a way of formulating the question that seems to offer some hope for resolving it.
Payment of interest on money
The casual statement on the case for paying interest on money is familiar. Real balances are produced at zero social cost. In an equilibrium in which the real yield on other assets exceeds that on money – or, more generally, in which the marginal rate of substitution between future consumption and present consumption exceeds the real return on money – individuals face a positive alternative cost of holding money. Given the zero social cost, this positive alternative cost implies that too little money is being held. Payment of interest on money removes the positive alternative cost. I focus on one aspect of this casual statement: How does an equilibrium arise with a real return on money less than the relevant intertemporal marginal rate of substitution?
