For many years, a fundamental problem in contact mechanics, both tribology and indentation problems, has been the inability to see what is taking place—the buried-interface problem. Over the past few years, there have been developments whereby it has become possible to perform contact mechanics experiments in situ within a transmission electron microscope. These new experiments have been enabled by both the miniaturization of sensors and actuators and improvements in their mechanical stability and force sensitivity. New information is now becoming available about the nanoscale processes of sliding, wear, and tribochemical reactions, as well as microstructural evolution during nanoindentation such as dislocation bursts and phase transformations. This article provides an overview of some of these developments, in terms of both the advances in technical instrumentation and some of the novel scientific insights.

The ability of electron microscopes to analyze all the atoms in individual nanostructures is limited by lens aberrations. However, recent advances in aberration-correcting electron optics have led to greatly enhanced instrument performance and new techniques of electron microscopy. The development of an ultrastable electron microscope with aberration-correcting optics and a monochromated high-brightness source has significantly improved instrument resolution and contrast. In the present work, we report information transfer beyond 50 pm and show images of single gold atoms with a signal-to-noise ratio as large as 10. The instrument's new capabilities were exploited to detect a buried Σ3 {112} grain boundary and observe the dynamic arrangements of single atoms and atom pairs with sub-angstrom resolution. These results mark an important step toward meeting the challenge of determining the three-dimensional atomic-scale structure of nanomaterials.

Assuring the quality, safety and efficacy of the complex medicinal drugs known as ‘biologicals’ has many facets of importance to public health. This survey covers the historical basis of this area of medical science through current issues and practices to the anticipation of future challenges. The key role of the World Health Organization in promoting international biological standardisation and of biostatistics in the design and analysis of biological assays is emphasised. Examples of the importance of quality control and standardisation are drawn especially from the fields of bacterial and viral vaccines. Assurance of the quality of these is essential for the successful implementation of childhood vaccination programmes aimed at the reduction and eradication of communicable diseases worldwide.
Structural phase transition study of Ba2YCu3O6+x in air

A structural phase transition study of Ba2YCu3O6+x (x = 0 to 1) has been conducted on a series of 13 quenched samples. These samples were prepared from an orthorhombic material by annealing at temperatures from 400 to 1000 °C in air, followed by rapid quenching. All quenchings were performed by using a liquid-nitrogen-cooled copper cold well with a continuous flow of cooled helium gas. Various measurements including x-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, Meissner effect, and scanning electron microscopy were carried out in order to correlate the nature of the phase transition with erystallographic data, superconductivity, and annealing temperature. The phase transition from Ba2YCu3,O7 to Ba2YCu3O6 appears to involve two orthorhombic regions: region A with a <b ≈ c/3 below approximately 600 °C and region B with cell parameters of a < b < c/3 from & 600 to 708–720 °C. The transformation from orthorhombic to tetragonal takes place in the temperature range of 708–720 °C. This transition appears to be a second-order, order-disorder type.
