We describe the scientific goals and survey design of the First Large Absorption Survey in H i (FLASH), a wide field survey for 21-cm line absorption in neutral atomic hydrogen (H i) at intermediate cosmological redshifts. FLASH will be carried out with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) radio telescope and is planned to cover the sky south of $\delta \approx +40\,\deg$ at frequencies between 711.5 and 999.5 MHz. At redshifts between $z = 0.4$ and $1.0$ (look-back times of 4 – 8 Gyr), the H i content of the Universe has been poorly explored due to the difficulty of carrying out radio surveys for faint 21-cm line emission and, at ultra-violet wavelengths, space-borne searches for Damped Lyman- $\alpha$ absorption in quasar spectra. The ASKAP wide field of view and large spectral bandwidth, in combination with a radio-quiet site, will enable a search for absorption lines in the radio spectra of bright continuum sources over 80% of the sky. This survey is expected to detect at least several hundred intervening 21-cm absorbers and will produce an H i-absorption-selected catalogue of galaxies rich in cool, star-forming gas, some of which may be concealed from optical surveys. Likewise, at least several hundred associated 21-cm absorbers are expected to be detected within the host galaxies of radio sources at $0.4 < z < 1.0$ , providing valuable kinematical information for models of gas accretion and jet-driven feedback in radio-loud active galactic nuclei. FLASH will also detect OH 18-cm absorbers in diffuse molecular gas, megamaser OH emission, radio recombination lines, and stacked H i emission.

Daily luteal progesterone levels were measured for 124 regularly menstruating women, aged 18–44, by radioimmunoassay of steroid levels in saliva. A consistent pattern of age variation in luteal function was found, with the lowest levels of progesterone in the 18–19-year-old and 40–44-year-old groups, the highest values in the 25–34 year olds, and intermediate values in the 20–24 and 35–39-year-old groups. The striking similarity of this pattern of age variation with empirically and theoretically generated curves of apparent fecundability, suggests that age-related changes in ovarian function may underlie observed age variation in fecundability.

Summary
Editors' introduction
The future of the human species is dependent on reproductive ecology, so it is logical for us to want to know how reproduction is affected by features of urban life, both old and new. Ellison makes it clear that past ecological transitions, from foraging to agriculture, and from agriculture to industrialisation, altered reproductive ecology dramatically. Both transitions involved changes in residential pattern that are part of urbanisation. The post-industrial city also can have an impact, and Ellison describes several mechanisms and pathways, termed “proximate determinants,” by which urban factors can influence parameters of reproductive function, specifically ovarian function. Population density per se is not the salient factor, but urbanism includes behaviors that can affect ovarian function. Among these are urban patterns of maturation and aging, anxiety, dietary composition, pollutants, as well as energy expenditure and energy balance, a topic that Ulijaszek also addresses in chapter 13. Although most of these factors are not unique to cities, they may be more varied there and so make a stronger contribution to variation in ovarian function. By recognising that cities are not a unitary phenomenon but show great variation, the focus turns towards identifying the specific determinants of ovarian function. The ability to define these determinants depends on their accurate measurement.

Summary
Ever since Malthus assigned fertility regulation to the realm of social behaviour and ‘ moral restraint ’, there appears to have been a reluctance on the part of demographers to view normal (i.e. non-pathological) biological factors as presenting anything more than some upper limit on human fecundity. Menarche, menopause, the fixed duration of gestation, perhaps some unavoidable frequency of pregnancy loss, these are often viewed as providing a set of bounds on the human potential for offspring production (Bongaarts & Potter, 1983; Campbell & Wood, 1988). But an understanding of variation within these bounds is ordinarily sought in terms of human behaviour; rates of marriage and divorce, the use of contraception and abortion, the frequency of intercourse and spousal separations, lactation and weaning. There is no question that these aspects of our social and personal behaviour strongly influence our fertility, nor that they themselves are shaped by more distal elements of our cultural values and social and economic institutions. At the same time it is becoming increasingly apparent that biologically and ecologically mediated variation in female fecundity also contributes to patterns of human fertility. Age effects on female fecundity provide a particularly clear example both of the importance of biological factors affecting fertility, and of the potential for biological anthropologists to contribute empirically and theoretically to our understanding of human fertility variation.
Age and natural fertility
The age pattern of female fertility is one of the most familiar aspects of human demography and one of the basic elements in our understanding of human population dynamics.

The Later Bronze Age site at Black Patch consisted of hut platforms and enclosures set in a system of rectangular fields. The settlement area is overlooked by round barrows. Area and sample excavations of the settlement revealed circular huts and activity areas within a C-14 date range of 1070 ± 70 bc–830 ± 80 bc. Extensive economic data in the form of seeds, animal bones, foreign stones and artefacts were recovered. These formed the basis of an economic resource-area analysis undertaken around Black Patch and other contemporary occupation sites on the South Downs. From this an economic activity model is proposed.
